The Block contestants wow judges with their coffered ceiling, completing it in just 48 hours

THERE was a reason why The Block judges couldn’t look away from this room — it had a striking feature that you rarely see in bedrooms anymore.

The Block - Family bathroom week

IS THIS the grand master of all bedroom ceilings?

The Block judges seem to think so, well at least when comparing it to the other four rooms. The moment they walked into the revamped bedroom of South Australian couple Kerrie and Spencer, they couldn’t look down.

It helps that Spencer is a residential builder as he managed to transform the dishevelled-looking kid’s room into a fairyland-feel with an elegant coffered ceiling — in just 48 hours.

Coffered ceilings (a grid of beams across the ceiling) may feel “dated”, but when matched with the right deco can add drama to a room.

Kerrie and Spencer proved this by matching it with a soft-colour palette and pairing it with a “nanna” chenille bedspread. The ceiling also had a uniquely shaped pendant light.

Judge Shaynna Blaze said: “I am loving that they have matched with it nanna chenille in a very modern way. If you put that on a bed two years ago, you’d say that is daggy.”

Whether it belongs in a children’s room is questionable.

While the three judges loved the key features of the room and were overall impressed with what they achieved in the two-day challenge, they agreed it didn’t register as a child’s room.

Kerrie and Spencer came second with a score of 24.5, behind NSW newlyweds Hayden and Sara who won the overall challenge with a score of 25.5.

Their prize was first dibs on which apartment in The Gatwick they will be renovating over the next three months.

SA contestant Spencer created the coffered ceiling himself, impressing judges with his skill and timing, having completed it in just 48 hours.

ROOM REVEALS

HAYDEN AND SARA, NSW, SCORE: 25.5

The NSW couple went for a circus-theme for their kid’s room challenge and they nailed it from the interior to the design.

“Oh this says kids straight way,” Shaynna said.

They transformed the dull room which had soft cream-painted walls, a dusty old dressing table and overall, really bad furniture into a fun-filled kid’s room, with a modern, open play space.

The walls were painted white, had a matching wardrobe and door, while an orange bedhead added a pop of colour.

BIANCA AND CARLA, VIC, SCORE: 22

The netballers were tasked with revamping a room that definitely needed a modern touch.

From its dusty outdated green carpet, old timber cupboard, cream walls and randomly

placed artwork, the girls’ definitely managed to transform it into a kid’s wonderland.

They decorated it with a white bunk-bed and matching cupboard, grey carpet, light grey table and chair set and soft pastel pink bed sheets, giving it a cosy, contemporary feel.

It was a playroom as well as a sleeping room, however the poorly placed blanket box under the window is what let them down.

Judge Darren Palmer said: “If it were my child I wouldn’t put something there they could climb up and out the window that easily.”

Co-judge Shaynna Blaze said they could have done more to jazz up the blank wall.

NORM AND JESS, QLD, SCORE 20

Norm and Jess definitely had their work cut out for them with this narrow-shaped room.

They transformed it into a girl’s bedroom with a “princess” feel, opting for floor to ceiling white drapes, a matching white bed with plenty of storage space and kids furniture to match.

But it didn’t impress the judges who had concerns with dust, paint, a missing drawer and no bed sheets.

The couple also made the same mistake Bianca and Carla from Victoria made — they positioned the bed under the window, which is a big no, no.

COURTNEY AND HANS, WA. SCORE: 19.5

The ceiling in this room was probably the worst out of the five bedrooms — it was falling apart, along with a few other things.

And while Courtney and Hans gave it a whimsical makeover, it wasn’t enough to bring them to the top of the leaderboard. They scored the lowest at 19.5.

The couple also had a similar compliance issue with a bench positioned under the window.
