The Block was ‘the biggest mistake of my life’, says contestant Sara
WE’VE never seen a tantrum quite like this on The Block. Sara and Hayden have explained last night’s shocking outburst - but what they did next will have Block fans fuming.
NOBODY can say she didn’t warn us.
Block contestant Sara made repeated threats during the past week of the show that she’d “walk off The Block” if she and husband Hayden didn’t win this week’s bathroom challenge.
They’d invested a jaw-dropping $75k into their room — including an eye-catching brass bathtub — but money can’t buy taste, and the judges awarded them a last-place score of 22 during Sunday night’s room reveal.
In an interview in today’s issue of TV Week, 31-year-old flight attendant Sara says the feedback “just broke” them.
“It got to the point where if I’m going to be constantly insulted on national TV, I’d rather spend time with my family and daughter,” she said. “It ripped my heart out.”
There were attempts to soften the blow, though: Host Scott Cam relayed that judge Shaynna Blaze had offered to mentor the pair with some much-needed styling advice, an unprecedented move on The Block. After approval from their fellow competitors, they begrudgingly accepted the offer.
It was after judging was finished that the real drama began.
The couple were shown on set getting microphoned up for a post-judging interview, when Sara warned the crew: “Make it quick — I’m not coming back. Dead f**king set. I’m f**king over this.”
Then the screaming started — all directed at one of the show’s producers.
“AGAIN, last? Even after EVERYTHING, LAST. You’ve GOT to be kidding me. This is F**KED. IT’S F**KED, IT’S F**KING EMBARRASSING NOW,” she yelled, all the while panting heavily.
Hayden, heavy-lidded and clutching a can of beer, appeared more resigned.
“Three weeks in a row, you know?” he sighed wearily.
“F**k ‘em. I don’t want to DO this anymore. F**k this! I’m going mate! I’m over it! I’m not coming back. Here — take your f**kin’ mics,” said Sara.
“I don’t want to do this if we’re going to constantly come last and be embarrassed on national TV — why would I want to be here?”
With that, Sara left the building — but cameras followed as she sat in the gutter outside the studio, the producer consoling her.
“We’re being made to look like absolute fools. That bathroom did not deserve to be last. DID NOT. DESERVE. TO BE LAST. I’m f**king walking. I don’t want to do this anymore,” she threatened as Hayden followed her out of the building, carrying a bag of their stuff.
“Guys, come on … don’t do it,” the producer pleaded.
“You know what? This was the biggest mistake of my entire life,” Sara told him. “We don’t want to be here anymore. I’m done. It’s embarrassing.”
Hayden appeared to try and get a message to the judges via the producer: “Tell them to f**king change their tune, man,” he begged.
So do Sara and Hayden actually follow through with their promise? In a teaser for this week’s episodes, we see they do return to The Block — but perhaps not to stay.
“I can’t do it to myself mentally, so … I will have to call it quits,” Sara tells the cameras.
Speaking to TV Week, Sara confirmed that she and Hayden do return to The Block - and in a move that may have viewers seeing red, revealed that they in fact turned down judge Shaynna Blaze’s offer of a meeting.
“Shaynna wanted to have a meeting, to kind of get us back on track. To be honest, the way I was feeling the night of the reveal and the morning after the reveals, I just wasn’t interested.”
Viewers watching the meltdown last night took to social media to vent about the couple:
The thing with Sara is... losing 3 weeks in a row isnât embarrassing. Her behavior is. Sheâs taking the judgeâs comments personally, and not constructively. She continues to think she knows best, and blows $75K on an ensuing bathroom. #9TheBlock

2015 Block winners Chantelle and Steve were underdogs and barely won any room reveals. Never spat the dummy and carried on with dignity- going on to win the series. Take note Sara you brat #9TheBlock

Sara has no taste. Thatâs something sheâll just have to deal with. A tantrum wonât fix the fact she thinks money = taste. #9TheBlock

Hayden and Sara didnât deserve the 1 on 1 with Shaynna, theyâve repeatedly ignored the judges critiques already #9TheBlock

Geez people come on give Sara on #9TheBlock just a small break! Have some #empathy and see that she is legit not coping, and looks very close to the edge of a #breakdown.

We are better than this peeps!
#9TheBlock Has Sara never heard of Chantelle and Steve? They only won one room and walked away winners! I hope she does walk & they get someone grateful for the opportunity @TheBlock

Watching Saraâs hissy fit because she came last was uncomfortable to watch and she is embarrassing - please actually leave and donât let it be a fake walk out #9TheBlock

Sara came into this show expecting to win every week. Now that sheâs not she doesnât want to play any more. She needs to grow up #9TheBlock

Sara's issue is pure ego. If she listened, studied & learned, she would win over the judges & the public. Instead, she acts like a child, berates her husband & yells at a producer... without learning anything. #9theblock

In a radio interview with hit105’s Stav, Abby and Matt this morning, fellow Block contestants Jess and Norm both nominated Sara and Hayden as the most “annoying” team on the show.
“I just find them a little bit selfish. She goes off all the time, and I just don’t handle that,” said Norm.
— The Block airs 7.30pm Monday to Wednesday and 7pm Sundays on Nine.
