How to turn Kmart $29 ottoman into ‘expensive’ bedside table
Savvy Kmart shoppers have managed to give a popular item a whole new look and function, sharing their clever redesign on TikTok.
Ottomans have been all the rage for years now, but savvy Kmart shoppers have now found alternate ways to use them.
Generally, the item is designed to be used as an upholstered low couch, stool or footstool – with Big W always causing a frenzy whenever it releases its range of plush animal ottomans.
However, all the talk has now shifted to the popular $29 Kmart ottoman with clever TikTok users showing how they’ve transformed it into a chic bedside.

One woman, who goes by the handle @s.imonette, has attracted half a million views on her clip after giving the item a complete makeover.
She was lucky enough to nab the ottoman in grey for just $19, in a sale.
“Kmart hack: Made this cute fluted side table for $19,” she began the video.
“Just cut off the cushion – there is a wooden piece underneath.”
She then goes onto prime and paint the ottoman, giving it several coats before waiting for it to dry and using it as a bedside table.
“This is actually the best DIY I’ve seen on this app,” one person commented.
“CLEVER,” another person added.
One TikTok user said had they seen her hack earlier they wouldn’t have spent $200 on a bedside table, while others were blown away by its storage space.
“OMG and it has storage in it! This is SMART,” one person wrote.
After seeing the viral trend on the social media platform, another Aussie TikTok user by the handle @hannahleavey rushed to her local Kmart store to give it a go.
“So I saw this Kmart hack on TikTok and I ran to my nearest Kmart store and got the last one,” she said in the clip.
“It had a few scratches on it but that’s OK because I was going to paint over it.”
She then headed to Bunnings and grabbed a mint green coloured paint.
After cutting the velvet off with fabric scissors and using a box cutter to remove the rest, she discovered an “awesome” piece of wood underneath.
“I ended up painting straight on it and did three coats.”
“I was looking for a pastel bedside for so long and they’re so expensive so I was so happy when I saw this hack.”
Hannah said she managed to transform the ottoman into a trendy bedside in just a few hours.
