Social media users have been shocked at the results of this simple two-ingredient hack for cleaning the inside of their kettle.

The dangers of not cleaning your kettle have been revealed, with one social media user revealing all you need is two ingredients to make it spotless.

The Facebook user took to the Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook page to reveal they had been growing lemon and orange trees in their backyard for 20 years.

“Most are given away to friends, family and customers at work, but I also use lemons to clean my kettle when it gets black inside,” the social media user said.

The cleaning hack called for one or two lemons cut into wedges and put in the kettle which is then filled up with water and boiled twice.

If your kettle is not cleaned frequently enough, two different things can happen, depending on whether the water in your area is hard or soft.

“Hardness in drinking water is mainly the result of the presence of large amounts of two minerals – calcium and magnesium. Hard water requires more soap than soft water to obtain a lather,” the original poster said.

The user added it can cause scale to form on hot water pipes and fittings.

Soft water is also a concern and is when water contains small amounts of calcium and magnesium, which can lead to greater corrosion of pipes.

The build-up can make the inside of your kettle turn black.

Many thanked the Facebook poster for sharing the cleaning hack.

“Thank you, I tried vinegar last week with mediocre results,” one person said.

“I’ve got the kettle boiling now with two lemons in it. Cheers to a clean kettle! Bonus is that they smell delightful as well.”

Another said: “Great tip. I was about to do mine with brush and some soap. This idea looks great. I will definitely give it a go.”

A third said: “I’ve done this for years when my kettle gets the white build-up on it.

“Don’t have to worry too much about making sure it’s totally rinsed as lemon tea tastes better than vinegar or chemicals.”

Others said they have had similar results with using store-bought lemon juice or white vinegar.

One person said they’ve even done this with leftover lemonade.

Lemons have been used as a natural cleaning tool for decades, as the citric acid acts as a natural disinfectant.

A combination of lemon and boiled water will help kill household germs and remove grime.
