The son of a woman infected with coronavirus at the stricken Newmarch House has called NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian “delusional” after she defended the state’s ability to handle future outbreaks.

Anthony Bowe, whose mother contracted coronavirus at the western Sydney aged care facility, dismissed Ms Berejiklian’s reassurances that “everything” had been done by the government to prevent another outbreak.

“She’s delusional,” Mr Bowe told Today.

“The fact that she thinks they're getting the best care is not even close.

“There's some serious issues regarding end-of-life plans.”

He added that there had been “no transparency from day one”.

“Apparently if you're on the Ruby Princess you get five-star treatment in a motel to quarantine. But apparently if you're elderly in this country you get nothing,” Mr Bowe said.

Mr Bowe said his mother was doing well after previously testing positive for COVID-19. She recently received a negative test, and now has to receive two negative tests on consecutive days before she can leave the stricken facility.

Yesterday another resident from the facility died from coronavirus, taking the total number of deaths from facility to 16.

Today, Ms Berejiklian said NSW had worked with the National Cabinet and was doing “everything” possible to keep residents safe and give families access to residents.

The Premier said she felt it was the responsibility of all aged care facilities to “assume the virus is going to enter their premises and they need to have a plan to prevent death, keep residents safe, but also keep families safe”.

She said mistakes had been made in Newmarch House, located near Penrith.

“There is no doubt this is an example of where things need to happen better, no doubt about that,” she told Today.

COVID-19 What happened this week

NSW recorded nine new cases of coronavirus overnight after conducting close to 6900 tests.

Of those newly diagnosed, one was an aged care facility worker from Newmarch House.

The aged care facility confirmed yesterday a 16th resident infected with COVID-19 had died, raising the state’s death toll to 46.

About 37 of the 100-odd residents at the nursing home have tested positive to the virus. The death took the state’s total death toll to 46.

An outbreak of coronavirus occurred in the facility after a staffer member infected with coronavirus worked for six shifts while suffering from coronavirus symptoms.
