Elizabeth Sobinoff reveals diet behind 10kg weight loss

After months of speculation, Married At First Sight star Liz Sobinoff has finally shared the diet behind her dramatic transformation.

MAFS 2020 Episode 20 Recap: Main Course Meltdown

She returned to MAFS this week looking like a completely different woman.

But after spending months fending off speculation around her 10kg weight loss and putting it down to her health issues, Elizabeth Sobinoff has admitted she has actually been following a popular diet.

The 29-year-old opened up to Who magazine about her dramatic new look as she embarks at her second chance of love on national television, revealing she has been following the 5:2 diet which is based around intermittent fasting.

She also said she hits the gym several times a week for a workout, stating she does it to “reduce stress”.

However, Lizzie – who has kept quiet about her fitness regimen until now – said she didn’t want her revelation to “glorify” dramatic weight loss.

“It’s still very much me. I know people are going to say, ‘Well, you look completely different to how we saw you last year.’ But don’t always focus on the outer shell,” she told the publication.

“This has always been me. We grow, as people. I don’t glorify weight (loss) and be like, “I’m better now.””

Over the last year, Lizzie has undergone a dramatic transformation, sparking concern from her fans who believe she is worryingly “slim”.

Some of those fans “genuinely concerned” about her appearance flooded a recent post on Instagram in which the reality star posed in her underwear while holding a jar of moisturiser.

One person said: “I adore you, yet I’m genuinely concerned. This is now beyond just ‘looking skinny’. I hope you are OK.”

Another said: “Sorry I don’t want to sound rude in any way but you’re beautiful but you don’t look well. You have lost a lot of weight.”

“Wow I love you but you don’t look healthy,” another person wrote.

One commenter added: “And I ain’t being rude as I do admire her and her strength but it’s worrying.”

It wasn’t the first time that had happened, with fans expressing concern multiple times since she shed 10kg.

Lizzie, who was cruelly fat-shamed by her first “husband” Sam Ball, last year told fans the secret to her new look was “getting rid of toxic people” – seemingly making reference to her now ex-hubby.

Sam had shocked MAFS viewers when he told producers, “I’ve never really dated girls as big as Elizabeth in the past,” after seeing her for the first time at their “wedding”.

The backlash was huge, with Lizzie eventually feeling the need to explain her weight, stating she has two chronic health conditions which affect it – porphyria, a blood disorder that can affect the nervous system and other organs, and a mild form of lupus which is an auto-immune disease.

In a video shared on her Instagram last year, she explained her health struggles can cause her to gain as much as 20kg at times. The reality TV star remained tight-lipped about the diet she began following after MAFS until this week.

WHAT IS THE 5:2 DIET?

The 5:2 diet (or fast diet as it is less commonly known) is based on the concept of intermittent fasting and is, according to nutritionist Rick Hay, simple to follow.

“It’s just five days of the week where you eat normally – but when I say normally that doesn’t mean pizza and coke,” the author of The Anti Ageing Food & Fitness Plan told news.com.au previously.

“Then the other two days, which don’t have to be in a row, you are restricted to 500, 600, 700 calories, depending on whose regimen you’re following.”

Dr Michael Mosley first introduced the idea of eating a restrictive diet two days of the week on a 2012 episode of BBC science show Horizon, touting it as a “surprisingly easy” way to incorporate intermittent fasting into your life.

Since then it has gone on to be one of the most popular diets around the world, largely thanks to the fact it is easy for adults to follow.
