Cadbury Caramilk: Why chocolate tastes different this time around

It’s returned to stores with much fanfare, but eagle-eyed fans have noticed the cult chocolate block is different from last time and they’re furious.

Cadbury’s Caramilk may have returned to stores with much fanfare, but it hasn’t stopped several devoted chocoholics from noticing the cult sweet treat tastes different this time around.

Fans of the caramel and white chocolate hybrid block have taken to social media to question whether the recipe has changed.

In response, Cadbury has confirmed the batch may taste differently to Caramilk fans because it’s a new batch.

“Beware guys — the flavour IS NOT the same, does not have that depth it had in last year’s batch,” one person posted in the Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook group.

“They must have changed the recipe it’s just like white chocolate.”

Others agreed, with one person remarking they had never tried it until recently but it was “just like white chocolate”.

“It tastes more like just plain white chocolate now,”one wrote, while another added: “Sorry but I think they’ve changed the recipe, I bought some yesterday & it tastes just like white chocolate — BOOOOO.”

In a statement to news.com.au a Cadbury spokesman said the new batch of Caramilk could taste differently, but not because the recipe has changed.

“We know that the caramel notes of Caramilk get stronger over time, and given how fresh this new batch is, we anticipate the caramel flavour to become stronger,” the statement read.

“While there will always be slight differences in the taste of a product depending on the individual batch and seasonal variances, the ingredients remain the same.”

Last month Cadbury confirmed Caramilk was making a return in supermarkets after overwhelming customer feedback.

“We’ve listened to the tens of thousands of Aussies asking us to bring Cadbury Caramilk back,” Cadbury marketing manager Katrina Watson said.

“We couldn’t ignore their passion for our golden chocolate block, so we’re proud to be bringing it back.”

Cadbury’s Caramilk, a hybrid caramel and white chocolate bar, was part of the chocolate brand’s line-up in New Zealand and Australia until it was discontinued in 1994.

It arrived back in Australian supermarkets for a limited run in early 2018, however blocks of the precious golden chocolate were hard to come by.

Soon it emerged savvy shoppers were buying Caramilk in bulk, selling it on eBay for up to 10 times the recommended retail price.

After it was discontinued, Christian Hull launched a petition to make the white chocolate caramel block “a permanent thing”, gathering more than 18,000 signatures.
