Arnott’s change means more Aussies can enjoy fan favourite

Arnott’s is known for its crackers and now the brand is bringing out new versions of existing favourites Barbecue Shapes and Jatz.

The rumours are true – Arnott’s has released gluten-free versions of two fan-favourite snacks.

Buzz about the arrival of gluten-free Barbecue Shapes and Jatz crackers hit TikTok last week, with user @han_fitzy, who posts about her life as a coeliac, taking to the social media app on Thursday with a scoop about the new release.

“Oh my god, look, we did it! It’s happening,” she said.

“This is the best day of my life, this is the best news I’ve heard all year.”

Now, news.com.au can reveal that the two new snacks will hit the shelves from early April at Coles, Woolworths and other independent retailers, each costing $5.50 a box.

Arnott’s already has a large gluten free range, with customers over the moon at the announcement of gluten free Tim Tams in October 2023.

The gluten-free range also includes Scotch Finger, Mint Slice, TeeVee Snacks, Choc Ripple, Shortbread Cream and Tiny Teddy.

The gluten-free range caters to people with coeliac disease – an auto-immune condition that means they are allergic to gluten products such as wheat, rye and barley – and others avoiding gluten.

“Bringing the delicious taste and quality of Arnott’s products to gluten free consumers is a priority for our business,” Arnott’s Crackers & Crispbread marketing manager Marco Maiese.

“We are convinced that the Gluten Free Jatz and Gluten Free Barbecue Shapes are the best tasting savoury gluten free snacks on the market.”

Online snack fans welcomed the announcement.

“Arnotts are KILLING the GF game! I just need over brands to catch up,” one social media user said.

Another added: “My coeliac family is freaking out.”

“I knew I wasn't crazy thinking these were coming after Shapes liked my comment asking for these,” one social media user declared.

But consumers may not be so pleased by the price of the new products.

A box of regular Barbecue Shapes retails for $4 for a 175 gram serve, which works out at $2.29/100g.

The gluten-free version will retail for $5.50 for a smaller 110g box, or $5/100g – more than double the price of the original.

Gluten-free Jatz also work out more than twice the cost of the original. At full price, a 225g box of Jatz will set you back $4 or $1.78/100g, while the gluten-free 130g pack, retailing at $5.50, equates to $4.23/100g.
