Kate Hudson reveals the truth about balancing being a mum with work and keeping fit
In an exclusive interview with news.com.au, Kate Hudson has revealed how she balances being a mum with work and keeping fit.
Kate Hudson is like any other busy mother — she’s up at the crack of dawn attending to her four-month-old baby girl Rani Rose.
And if she’s not doing that, she’s running around getting her other two kids (Ryder, 15, and Bingham, 7) ready for school — pick-ups and drop-offs are part of her typical day.
Yes, she may get a little extra help, but the 39-year-old has a work life like most people — it starts at 9am and usually finishes around 5pm.
“I shut my phone off at 5pm and the last thing I want to do is workout. I want to be with my kids,” she told news.com.au in an exclusive interview.
The recently-appointed WW (formerly Weight Watchers) ambassador has always led a healthy and active lifestyle.

Motivation to keep fit has never really been an issue, she says — however, Hudson, like many other mums, struggles to find the balance between work, life and exercise — especially since having her third child (and first) with boyfriend Danny Fujikawa.
“It is the most challenging thing in the world to balance kids and personal time,” the mother-of-three said.
“I work so much I don’t always have the time for personal trainers, that’s why my pilates is a special time.
“I workout in weird places — like in hotel rooms where I don’t need weights — I usually have about 20 minutes, so I’ll do yoga or my pilates,” she said.
“I really utilise technology like apps to give me no excuse, and I’ll also try get out and walk.
“When I find myself inside too much, or if I’m on a lunchbreak in New York, I’ll walk instead of driving.”
Hudson said she tried to put time aside for herself, despite it being a challenge.
“Everyone knows this but you have to make the time. I pick and choose when, obviously you can’t do it all,” she said.
Despite being open-minded to all workouts and training styles, Hudson said pilates was her go-to core-centric workout. She aims to do it at least three times a week — especially after giving birth to her bub in October. She’s on a mission to get fit again.
In a refreshingly honest take just eight weeks after giving birth., Hudson posted her weight-loss methods — a usually uncommon act among celebrities.
She offered her 9.9 million Instagram followers a snap of herself in a sports bra and long tights with a caption on how she plans to lose the weight slowly.
Her goal is to lose 11kg in Autumn before an upcoming role — when asked if she was told to lose the weight by movie producers, she said no.
“I have had a wonderful experience with the people I have worked with and the roles I’ve done and have never felt pressured to lose or gain weight,” she told news.com.au.
“If I make those choices they’re always done really responsibly. I think for me a lot of that pressure comes from outside of Hollywood … from the media and not internally.”
WHY SHE REALLY JOINED WW
When Hudson’s collaboration with WW was revealed via a FaceTime call in December with one of the company’s owners and most famous ambassadors, Oprah, it was met with criticism.
Some people saidthe actress was naturally thin and was also the owner (with her brother) of the fitness clothing company, Fabletics.
But she explained that’s “exactly why I’m here”, saying it wasn;t just about losing weight.
Hudson told news.com.au by becoming an ambassador for WW, which was renamed to WW in 2018, she hoped to inspire others to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
“I really joined (WW) to be able to spread the word for people who don’t understand what it is — one of the things I found throughout my years, especially through Fabletics, is that everyone always wants to know ‘how do you stay healthy’, ‘what do you do to workout and stay fit’.
“Everyone’s lifestyle is different, everyone needs a different path for their health, but the one place you can go where all that’s all possible is WW.
“Jumping on board with them and being on a mission to continue to help and inspire people to live healthier is wonderful, and I absolutely love it.”
When asked about her diet and why she loves the WW program, the Almost Famous star said it was all about simplicity and flexibility.
“I cook, yes, we cook a lot in the house — I do a lot of steamed fish and vegetables, roast chickens. I keep things pretty simple,” Hudson said.
On whether she calorie counts her food, she responded: “Oh yes, I’ve done it all. But after everything I have tried and done, WW Freestyle is the easiest program hands down.
“For me, honestly, it’s helped me in ease. For someone who is knowledgeable about food, and obviously it’s a passion of mine, the app for me is about ease and simplicity.
“There is a barcode on there so when I’m in a store I can use it to tell me what the exact nutritional value of a product is.”
She said that ultimately, it’s about helping people know where to go to practice mindfulness, where to go when you fall off the wagon and need picking up again and how to choose the best foods and activity for your overall wellness.
“It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle,” she said.
When things get a bit tough and the negative thinking creeps in — she immediately shifts focus.
“The number one thing you need to do is shift your brain focus to say ‘I can’ and not ‘I can’t’ — I say it to my friends all the time,” Hudson said.
“I think no matter what walk of life you come from, it’s always going to be up to you on how dedicated you want to be in that part of your life. Unfortunately, no one can do it for you.”
