‘It’s crippling’ MAFS star Hayley reveals transformation after drug hell
The Married At First Sight bride went through a “crippling” period of addiction – until a day in the gym turned her life around.
Married At First Sight star Hayley Vernon made waves on last night’s episode with her OTT wedding antics.
But just a few years ago the reality star was unrecognisable — and in the grips of a drug addiction that had consumed her since her teens.
Speaking on the show Hayley explained how her broken family home saw her turn to drugs and end up seeing her kicked out of home at the age of 17.
My teenage years were probably a little bit rougher than most … I was abusing several substances,” she said.

“This was all I knew for about for about eight or nine years, it’s actually the worst thing in the world, it’s crippling.”
Incredibly, Hayley managed to kick her drug addiction by hitting the gym after some encouragement from a bodybuilder online.
“I started following a lady on Instagram and she was a body builder and she said, ‘Oh Hails you’re at this point of your life if you’ve got nothing to lose, pack a bag. Come to Queensland, come train and let’s turn your life around.’

“And then I started training. It gave me direction, it gave me purpose, it gave me focus and slowly, the pieces of the puzzle and people that I love came back into my life.”
In an interview with Who magazine earlier this week the 32-year-old said she had “battled things most women my age could only imagine”.
“Homelessness, mental abuse, physical abuse,” she said, revealing she had used meth and cannabis.
‘I HAVE DISFIGURING ACNE’
Also sharing a heartbreaking story on MAFS last night was bride Vanessa Romito whose severe acne had shattered her confidence when it came to dating.
I don’t go out on day dates, (I’m) most attractive at night, because when the lighting is dim … That’s me at my best,” she said.
“I have disfiguring acne.”
Vanessa, 31, said her skin problems had “damaged my confidence a lot” and she had been viciously bullied by classmates at school.
“I couldn’t handle going to school, because people would call me a creature,” she said. “Yeah, kids are nasty.”
Vanessa was paired with youth worker Chris Nicholls and was visibly nervous during their wedding, fearing her TV husband wouldn’t find her attractive because of her acne.
“I don’t think anyone would truly be satisfied with this,” she said, gesturing to her face. “I know beauty is only skin deep but I can’t get to that next date if they don’t like what they see. Because of that I’ve always felt that I was going to be left on the shelf.”
