Aussies lash Gold Coast woman booted from gym for rule break

A Gold Coast woman who saw red over a “ridiculous” rule at her gym is now copping heat from Aussies who agree she deserved to be kicked out.

'Ridiculous': Woman kicked out of Aussie gym

Thousands of Australians have sided with a gym after a Gold Coast woman was kicked out for breaking the fitness centre’s rules during her work out.

Kenzie Greaves went viral after she claimed she was booted from the Goodlife Health Clubs in Bundall for wearing slides instead of shoes last week.

After leaving the gym, Kenzie took to social media to vent her frustrations, explaining she has a broken toe and “can’t put shoes on”.

Now, more than 4000 Australians have rushed to the comment section of news.com.au’s Lifestyle Facebook page to weigh in on the issue after Kenzie said the policy shouldn’t apply to her, claiming it was her responsibility not to drop weights on her feet.

“It’s a safety rule they have to abide by. If you hurt yourself wearing slides instead of shoes I bet you’d sue them. Don’t like the rules, don’t become a member. It’s that simple,” one social media user commented.

Another said: “It’s for safety reasons. You sign up to it when you sign the contract. I understand that’s frustrating but they’d be liable if they allowed her to stay and workout if anything happened.”

“Safety rules are required. If you can’t fulfil them you have to break from the gym,” a third said.

Another said: “I have been with a gym in west Brisbane for nearly a year and enclosed shoes are mandatory. Looks like she had to learn the hard way. Rules are there for us all and not to be bent or broken.”

“You could trip over or harm your other toes. Better exercise at home until you are fully recovered,” one warned.

As one lamented: “The entitlement of some people is strong. Rules are rules gf, you signed the contract.”

Kenzie claimed the rule was “dumb” and said she should have been exempt due to her injury.

“I have a broken toe with a toenail almost coming off, that I’m probably going to have to have surgery to take it out,” she said in her video.

“So I cannot wear shoes, even just socks is so painful.”

Kenzie went on to explain as a result, she was “just wearing socks and slides” because shoes were too constricting, adding she wore the slip ons while walking around the gym but took them off to exercise because “they’re awkward to do stuff in”.

Wearing enclosed shoes is part of Goodlife Gym’s terms and conditions due to health and safety conditions.

The rules on its website state that “all members and guests must wear suitable clothes and enclosed sports shoes in any exercise areas”.

A spokesperson from Goodlife Health Club told news.com.au: “The health and safety of our members is our top priority and requiring all members to wear enclosed shoes is part of that promise”.

Many gyms in Australia and around the world instruct members to wear closed shoes at all times on the gym floor for health and safety reasons, however it is not a universal policy enforced at every facility.

Kenzie later shared an update on the situation, revealing on Instagram she had ended her contract.

“New gym feels,” she captioned a snap inside the new fitness centre.
