Who would have thought a cheap $2 coat hanger could be so versatile.

Savvy shoppers of the popular hardware store Bunnings have taken to social media in droves after discovering what you can do with the clothing item.

You obviously need more than one – which can cost anywhere between $2 for a 12-pack or $8.80 for a “heavy duty” 15-pack – but with a bit of time and patience, you could create your very own glowing snowflake.

“My coat hanger snowflake. Took a while and lots of cable ties but got there in the end,” one woman posted in the Facebook group Bunnings Mums.

“Jungle bell battery lights $8. I used 2 packs. Kinda want more on it haha,” she captioned her image of the design, adding that for her first go she is pretty happy with it.

After being bombarded with questions of how she did it, the woman responded that she used small cable ties and 16 hangers.

But it’s not just Bunnings shoppers jumping on the coat hanger hack. Kmart customers have also bombarded social media groups with their designs.

“Tried the coat hanger star hack. I think they turned out pretty good if I do say so myself,” one woman wrote about her three snowflakes in the Kmart Hacks & Decor group.

While there’s plenty of successful creations circulating online, others haven’t been so lucky in their attempts.

“So I attempted the coat hanger star. Mine didn’t turn out well. Look nothing like a star. Little disappointed. I did the 2 layers on 1 then 1 layer on the other one,” a Kmart shopper wrote.

But many were still impressed, telling the woman her creations looked “awesome”.

Others offered their advice, suggesting she use a minimum of 200 led coloured string lights, while another said she needs to be “a little more precise in your coat hanger orientation.”

“The ‘hook’ on each one needs to be pointing the same way, and be a mirror image of each other. I know I got caught a couple of times too,” one woman explained.

“Also with the lights, if you want to echo the star shape, follow the outline and/or the main of the ‘branches’ more closely. I attached these with cable ties.”
