Bunnings pulls Christmas decoration of Santa with an axe from its shelves

The popular hardware store has withdrawn a $129 Christmas product from its shelves after it raised eyebrows among shoppers.

Bunnings has pulled its $129 inflatable Axe Throwing Santa from shelves.

The popular hardware store said it had withdrawn the new product after deeming it “inappropriate”.

“While we’re always looking for unique Christmas items we decided this product wasn’t appropriate and we’ve withdrawn it from sale,” Bunnings director of merchandise Phil Bishop told news.com.au

The inflatable Santa was among its promotional items for Christmas.

The item raised eyebrows with some shoppers who branded it “peculiar” on Facebook.

Many saw the funny side though, stating it could easily pass as a “Halloween decoration”.

“It’s really cool, the target deflates after being ‘axed’ and pops back up again. There’s a few new ones in this year,” one shopper wrote about the product on Facebook.

“Hahahaha love it,” added another.

“I’m horrified but want one,” another said.

The 1.8m garden addition had come complete with a reindeer pinned to a rotating bullseye along with 18 LED lights which illuminate at night.

Those keen to add some festive cheer to their gardens can still get their hands on plenty of other inflatables on offer at the store from the typical to the less traditional.

They include Santa playing a saxophone, driving a forklift full of gifts, riding a shark and standing alone, watching the world go by.

The hardware store’s 2020 Christmas range which was released in August to add some early festive cheer amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

“After the year we’ve had, bushfires and a pandemic (and our metro Melbourne folk still getting through), looking forward to seeing lots of seasonal lighting,” a Bunnings employee from the Craigieburn outlet in Victoria wrote on Facebook last month.

The collection also includes a pink reindeer, LED and fibre optic trees and giant Nutcracker soldiers that tower over a metre high.

The festive range is only available in select stores.
