‘Run’: Warning note left at Brisbane rental inspection

A former tenant has left a handwritten note for prospective renters, warning it was their “worst rental experience ever.”

Relief could be on the way for renters facing record high prices

A former tenant has left a red handwritten note warning prospective renters to “run” from a mouldy, cockroach-infested” property in Brisbane.

The note, written in red marker, was left for hopeful renters to find during an inspection for a two-bedroom $480-a-week home in Brisbane’s northern suburbs on Monday.

“Worst rental experience ever,” the note read.

The note listed a number of issues with the property, including mould in the bathroom and bedroom, broken window hinges, peeling pain in the bathroom, and a cockroach infestation.

It also claimed the “owner comes onto (the) property when he shouldn’t”.

“(The) owner of this house is cheap. Rent was $390 before we moved in, now it is $480 – he won’t fix anything”.

The note was shared online by a Reddit user after her husband discovered it earlier this week.

Speaking to news.com.au, the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said her husband was “shocked” reading the list of issues and quickly left the property.

“He didn’t inspect further,” she said.

“(The) main concern for us in that text was regarding the owner who comes on to the property when he shouldn’t.”

Before leaving, her husband managed to take a photograph of the warning before the real estate agent reportedly wiped it off.

The couple, who have been struggling to find a property, were “very disappointed” when they read the list of issues.

“We had high hopes for that property,” the woman explained.

“It is really hard for many of us to find a house that is in a reasonable price range. We are still in the process of finding a rental house. We haven’t come across many that are available.”

Others online praised the tenant for leaving the note, with many agreeing it was “something every tenant should be doing”.

“I wish I had thought of this before leaving our old place,” one person wrote.

“This describes at least 80 per cent of the rentals I’ve lived in over the last 40 years. Except they forgot to mention the flaky asbestos roof,” said another.

“I’m dealing with this now. Got very sick due to hidden mould in walls and floor caused by a roof leak,” another wrote.

The former tenant told The Courier Mail they left the message to warn others to “steer clear unless they are desperate” and didn’t expect it to go viral online.

“We’ve been unhappy since day one and we just felt deceived,” they told the publication.

It comes as new PropTrack data, released in March, reveals rent has increased by 17 per cent over the past 12 months, across the combined capital cities in Australia.

Meanwhile, the national vacancy rate have dropped to record low of 0.7 per cent, highlighting the gap between limited housing supply and increasing demand.

In Brisbane, the median unit rent in Brisbane jumped almost 17 per cent compared to the start of last year to $560. The median Brisbane house rent is not that far ahead at $620 a week.

In Sydney – the most expensive city to rent in Australia – rent has climbed by more than $150 per week in close to 100 city suburbs over the past year.
