The Rose Bay home of one of Sydney’s most prominent families has hit the market with an $18m price guide.

The grand eight-bedroom residence at 770 New South Head Rd, listed for a forthcoming auction via Paul Biller and Adar Barhaim of Biller Property, has harbour views and is on the market for the first time in more than a century.

Alexander Briger, chief conductor, artistic director and founder of the Australian World Orchestra, grew up there, though he’s now based in Paris with his wife, Mezzo soprano Caroline Meng, and their daughter, Charlotte.

His mother, Elizabeth, who owns the property, was a ballet dancer in the 1950s and the first Australian to dance with the Swiss Ballet.

And his father, Andrew Briger, who died in 2003 at the age of 88, was a deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney in 1976 and the Mayor of Waverley from 1993-94.

Alex’s uncle, the renowned conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, was his mentor.

Biller says he already has interest at the $18m guide, with those interested recognising the development potential of the property that currently comprises two separate dwellings.

Each have exceptional harbour views, with independent living spaces that make it ideal for multi-generational living or dual-occupancy.

There’s an additional self-contained studio which would make an ideal teenage retreat or guest wing.

Complete with a double lock-up garage, it’s just steps from Rose Bay Beach, local shops, prestigious schools, and the Foreshore Walk, with Bondi Beach only a short drive away.

Biller also has in his books the six-bedroom Watsons Bay home on nearly 1000sqm of independent aviation professional and yachtie Linda Goodard, which has a $16m guide.

Biller says: “We must have the most luxury stock on the market at the moment in the eastern suburbs.”
