A prominent hairdresser has given the price of his designer home — which has appeared in Vogue — a trim ahead of a forthcoming auction.

Hairdresser to visiting celebrities and Sydney hotel guests Philippe Xavier has now given a modest trim to the price of his Alex Popov house in Mosman.

Earlier in the year the five-bedroom, four-bathroom home at 26 Esther Rd came to market with a $20m price guide.

It didn’t sell back in March and is now going to auction before Christmas with a guide of $19.5m.

Xavier is the not the first prestige homeowner to re-list this year but unlike some other vendors who have changed agencies, he and his wife Valda have stayed loyal to agent Geoff Smith, of Ray White Lower North Shore, and entrusted him to again sell the home.

Acclaimed architect Popov designed the house in 2000 with its unobstructed views to Balmoral Beach and also undertook more recent renovations.

Smith says the masterpiece home exudes luxury and sophistication and is just footsteps from iconic Balmoral Beach.

“There is a real shortage of houses at that end of the market and talk of interest rates coming down next year will only fuel prices, plus the cost of construction isn’t going down,” he says.

Xavier founded the hair salon Philippe Xavier within the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney 20 years ago.

Why investors are jumping back into the market

His home was built for grand-scale entertaining and has a C-shaped floor plan with living areas wrapped around a central north-facing courtyard.

A large swimming pool can be used whatever the weather and the kitchen is equipped with new European appliances, high-end joinery and marine-grade stainless steel.

The home has been showcased in several architectural publications and featured in Vogue Living for its design pedigree.

It is a full concrete construction with walls of glass and stacker doors plus custom-made joinery.

There is also a self-contained level with its own modern kitchen and bathroom. There is garaging for up to four cars plus off-street parking behind secure gates.

Philippe and Valda are downsizing within Mosman.
