13 bidders fuel stunning $18.5m riverfront sale
The Gold Coast auction market hit another high mark with the sale of a Hollywood Hills-style mega mansion on a Main River triple block.
A Hollywood Hills-style mega mansion on a prized Main River triple block has sold under the hammer for $18.5m.
Thirteen mostly local bidders registered for the Surfers Paradise trophy home following a high-profile sales campaign by Kollosche principal, Michael Kollosche, and agent, Jamie Harrison.
Apollo Auctions director Justin Nickerson opened proceedings with a first bid of $10m at the Valentine’s Day auction, where every woman present received a rose.
With three pre-auction offers already considered, a total of 26 bids followed quickly before Mr Nickerson made the final call on the auction floor.
“Generally, the number of bidders filters down as the price goes up, but when you have a really unique offering like this, with a stunning home and a great land parcel, you can expect healthy competition,” Mr Nickerson said.
Mr Kollosche said the Bayden Goddard-designed estate on a 2,221 sqm parcel at 8 Southern Cross Drive on exclusive Cronin Island was built seven years ago, with the owner undertaking a schedule of upgrades before taking it to market.
“The owner worked with us to prepare the property so that is presented really well, and as a result there was a lot of competition at auction after a very well-run campaign which attracted a lot of interest and strong buyers,” Mr Kollosche said.
Features of the luxury pad included five ensuited bedrooms as well as a pontoon, tennis court, multiple media rooms, resort-style pool, gaming room, custom wine cellar and rooftop office.
Soaring voids and gallery walkways created a sense of volume through levels, while expanses of glass captured stunning river and city skyline views.
The listing stated: “The amalgamation of three lots allowed architect Bayden Goddard to create a family home of architectural brilliance, featuring exaggerated living spaces that seamlessly connect, yet remain purposefully designated, across a three-storey floor plan.”
Mr Harrison said the buyer was a local who recognised the value of the home and its landmark position.
“It’s an incredible result, and it shows real depth of the prestige market to have 13 bidders at this price level.”

He earlier described the property as a “Hollywood Hills-style home”, which had attracted international interest, including a pre-market inspection by Jason Oppenheim, star of the US hit show, Selling Sunsets.
“To get a home of this scale and proportion is a rare find on the Gold Coast,” Mr Harrison said.
“Not only is it extremely rare to get three blocks of land on the Main River, it would be uncommercial to build a property of this calibre, of suspended concrete over three levels, in today’s construction environment.”
Mr Nickerson said the Gold Coast had recorded a strong start to the year’s auction season, even as more stock came to market giving buyers some breathing space.
“Late January and February is usually a buoyant time for the local market, and this year we are seeing a better balance with not a lot, but a little more, choice for buyers,” he said.
PropTrack data shows house prices in Surfers Paradise were up 33.2 per cent to a median of $3.85m.
