Bachelor in Paradise: Ciarran’s double standard called out by fellow contestants

Ciarran Stott has gone from laughable villain to “toxic” in the eyes of viewers after an alarmingly possessive display over his ex-girlfriend Renee.

The demise of once-beloved Bach star Ciarran Stott continues following a worryingly possessive display which saw him demand “permission” for his ex to go on a date with a new entrant to Bachelor in Paradise.

In an episode that saw the group discuss gender double standards, specifically surrounding “girl-code and bro-code”, Ciarran yet again emerged the villain as he accused Matt Whyatt, of Angie’s season of The Bachelorette, of being a ”snake” for taking his ex-girlfriend Renee Barrett on a date.

The very same ex Ciarran cheated on, and up to a day earlier was dating a friend of. Go figure.

As it stands, bedhopping Ciarran has not only dated one of Renee’s friends, Jess Brody, who he unceremoniously flicked in Monday’s episode, but also attempted to pursue close pal Cassandra Mamone early on (at the same time as Abbie Chatfield). He is now coupled up with Kiki Morris.

While initially, it looked as though Renee entered Paradise for the sole purpose of publicly dragging her cheating ex for his shady past (we’ll allow it), she has been largely supportive of him moving on.

When it came to Matt — a friend of Ciarran’s from their time on the show — asking Renee on a date, however, it was a no-go zone.

Fuming by the poolside in light of the new development with new flame Kiki by his side, it was clear Ciarran’s fellow contestants had no time for such a blatant double standard.

“Look, if you’re gonna date one of your mate’s exes, then have a bit of balls about him, let ’em know,” he growled to his confused castmates.

“I think Ciarran is trying to set the rules here for me in Paradise,” Renee said to the camera elsewhere.

“He can do what he wants, but I’m not allowed to do what I want. It’s absolutely bullsh*t. I think I deserve to be happy, and if Matt taking me on this date today makes me happy then I’m bloody doing it.”

Alisha Aitken-Radburn later summed up the situation perfectly: “It’s pretty rich of Ciarran to be so strictly enforcing some random bro code. I mean, like, Ciarran’s moved on. Ciarran’s moved on through half of Paradise. So maybe this is Renee’s time to shine.

“Ciarran has just made it very apparent to everyone in Paradise that he doesn’t want anyone touching anything that he has previously touched, which is gross because it treats people like property,” she added.

Unfortunately — little was said to his face, even at a tense Bula Banquet in which Matt shrugged off the “bro-code” Ciarran had attempted to apply to a friendship of barely a few months — leaving viewers to vent their frustrations on Twitter.

Author Rosie Waterland wrote: OMG so last night it was funny that Ciarran was the worst and a f***boi but tonight … he is toxic and terrible and this is a great lesson for all women watching: you are not any man’s property. Ever.”

Others passionately echoed the sentiment:

The ugly display comes after he ditched his most recent flame Jess Brody with record speed as Kiki Morris entered Paradise, telling Kiki what he’d had with Jess was purely sexual, and leaving Jess to approach him for an explanation.

As he shrugged Jess off after days of poolside romance, viewers were not happy.

Earlier in Monday’s episode, he had gloated about his popularity with the women in Paradise to the camera.

“I’m definitely feeling like a bit of a ladies’ man and a bit of, you know, hot property in this Paradise,” he said, grinning.

“Everybody wants a bit of me. All the girls want to take me on dates, want to get to know me. Yeah, buzzing. Nice one, ladies. Keep it coming.”

Ciarran’s fall from grace occurred almost instantly in Fiji.

The first barrage of outraged tweets hit after the first two episodes, when he was seen to be pursuing a number of girls at once – Cass Mamone, Abbie Chatfield and Jessica Brody.

Eyebrows were raised even higher when his ex-girlfriend, fellow Bachelor alum Renee Barrett, showed up on the Fijian island and told everyone he’d actually left The Bachelorette – and Angie – in order to be with her.

And when a carefree Ciarran was seen hopping into bed with his ex while Jess was wrapped around a toilet bowl with a severe case of gastro, viewers again unleashed.

Tonight, the knives were out again, and something tells us it won’t be the last time.

Bachelor in Paradise continues Wednesday night on Channel 10 from 7.30pm
