New father and former Married At First Sight contestant Bryce Ruthven has defended himself as a parent following his involvement in an ugly incident at a boxing match.

During the Whatever It Takes fighting event in Melbourne on Friday evening, Ruthven and Melissa Rawson, who welcomed twin boys in October, were involved in a fiery scuffle with former co-star Sam Carraro.

New mum Rawson was reportedly injured in the altercation after stepping in to diffuse tensions between the two men, whose reality TV grudge has seemingly spewed into real life, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Ruthven has since responded to suggestions the parents shouldn’t have been out socialising so close to the birth of their twins, particularly amid growing concerns of the Omicron variant.

Their twins, Levi and Tate Ruthven, were born 10 weeks premature and were only recently discharged from hospital.

“We’re allowed to have a night out to go and celebrate Christmas like anyone else is doing for work parties or with their friends,” Ruthven told his Instagram followers after the event.

In response to criticism his priorities were wrong, he argued his children shouldn’t have been included in the discussion.

“Having children has nothing to do with this situation. Are you a perfect parent?” he said.

Meanwhile, Rawson, who a friend said was “rattled” but otherwise OK following the fight, said she tried to push Carraro away from her TV husband.

“I put my hands up to prevent the situation from escalating and pushed Sam back, I could see that Bryce and Sam were going at each other. Jamie (Doran) was holding Bryce … that’s why I got in front of Bryce and you can see me pushing Sam back,” she said, according to the publication.

Ruthven, a radio host, described Carraro a “bully” and accused him of putting his partner in harm’s way.

“He stood there, I went up to the rope, things happened (and he) basically put her in danger. You never do that to a woman, you never put her in between two men,” he said.

Ruthven also claimed Carraro made several unsuccessful attempts to punch him.

“I never threw a punch as well, he threw multiple punches or tried to. None of them connected or came close. But the fact that you have a closed fist around a woman is just disgusting behaviour. The guy is a bully.”
