Married At First Sight’s Bryce Ruthven and Melissa Rawson have defended their decision to attend a boxing match, which resulted in the new mum being injured.
Ruthven was embroiled in a violent confrontation with his former co-star Sam Carraro at the Whatever It Takes fight night in Melbourne on Friday night and Rawson got caught in the scuffle while trying to help the father-of-two.
“She’s doing ok, she’s just a bit rattled,” a friend of the couple said adding that Rawson’s injuries were not serious.
It comes after fans questioned why the couple, who are parents to newborn twins, were out in the first place.
Dozens of spectators, including Ruthven and Rawson, were pictured not wearing face masks, which were not mandatory despite growing concerns about Omicron Covid infections around the country.
In October, the couple announced the birth of their sons Levi and Tate Ruthven, who were born 10 weeks premature and they were only recently released from hospital.
“We’re allowed to have a night out to go and celebrate Christmas like anyone else is doing for work parties or with their friends,” Ruthven said in an Instagram video.
He also directly responded to one follower who accused him of failing to prioritise his children.
“Having children has nothing to do with this situation. Are you a perfect parent? …,” he wrote.
Melbourne workplace trainer Rawson, 31, said she only got involved to try and diffuse the situation.
“I put my hands up to prevent the situation from escalating and pushed Sam back, I could see that Bryce and Sam were going at each other. Jamie [Doran] was holding Bryce … that’s why I got in front of Bryce and you can see me pushing Sam back,” she said.
Former Canberra DJ Ruthven called Carraro a “bully” and blasted him for endangering Rawson.
“He stood there, I went up to the rope, things happened … basically put her in danger,” he said.
“You never do that to a woman, you never put her in between two men.”
He added: “I never threw a punch as well, he threw multiple punches or tried to. None of them connected or came close. But the fact that you have a closed fist around a woman is just disgusting behaviour. The guy is a bully!”
Former Bachelorette contestant Jamie Doran, who is suing production company Warner Bros. Australia, blamed the fight on the “perils of reality TV”.
“I think unfortunately this is a by-product of the perils and pressure of reality TV and life after reality TV.”
