Kyle Sandilands believes nudity-filled radio stunt helped boost ratings

Kyle Sandilands says a nudity-filled radio segment is partly why his radio show with Jackie O achieved record-breaking ratings today.

How well do Kyle & Jackie O know each other?

Is a “penis pageant” to thank for Kyle and Jackie O’s record-breaking radio ratings?

The KIIS FM duo recorded the best results of their 21-year partnership today as they overtook 2GB’s Ben Fordham to become the highest rating breakfast show in Sydney (on both FM and AM).

Speaking to news.com.au after the results came through, Kyle joked the ratings coup could have been a result of a competition they ran on air in May to find the most aesthetically pleasing penis in Sydney.

“We’d just come off the back of ‘The Most Beautiful Penis Pageant’ that everyone said we shouldn’t do,” Kyle said when asked to explain why the show went up a huge 2.5 ratings points. “We insisted, it’s about time that women ogled at men rather than the other way around. It was a very woke thing for our show to do.”

Kyle had been trying to get the competition over the line with his radio station bosses for years without luck.

In the end, they allowed him to run a very sanitised version of the competition which culminated in five listeners presenting their packages to the hosts in studio who then picked which one was the ‘most beautiful’.

Kyle described the watered down competition as “flaccid” and had a crack at his bosses for being too restrictive.

“I told them, ‘you f**ked my penis contest!’” Kyle told news.com.au today. “I’m thinking when we get back, because of the great results today, we can go straight into auditions for next year’s penis pageant and bring it back bigger, stronger and stiffer than ever before!”

On a more serious note, Kyle said the show’s continued success was partly due to a “change in tact” in terms of who they target with their content.

“I used to think of a 21-year-old single girl from Bondi, that she was the type of listener … that’s who I was aiming at,” Kyle said. “But now, in the last couple of years, I’m doing the show for super fans and there’s a lot of them.”

That doesn’t mean Kyle and Jackie O ignore content that appeals to a younger audience. The hosts have surrounded themselves with a supporting cast of young producers who are regularly heard on air and they keep the hosts up to date on the latest trends.

“We learn about different things and social groups (through them),” Kyle said. “Everyone’s got a voice on that show which is why I think it’s got such a broad appeal.”

Other highlights from our chat with Kyle:

• Kyle said it felt “wonderful” to beat Ben Fordham in the ratings, and said the 2GB host sent him a lovely congratulatory message this morning. Kyle replied by “warning” Fordham that he needed to cut down on the “yelling”.

“He’s a real yeller,” Kyle said about the 2GB star. “Even this morning he was like, ‘CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING NUMBER ONE’, and I was like, ‘f***ing hell, bro, relax with the yelling! Can’t you just talk like a normal person?’”

• Kyle, who is currently at his house in Port Douglas, said he planned to celebrate today’s ratings result by visiting Darryn Lyons’ gallery in Port Douglas with a couple of bottles of Nueva Sangria (Kyle owns the sangria company).

• And finally, we asked Kyle if he had a bonus written into his contract for going number one overall (both FM and AM).

“No, my bonuses are only raked in on the number one FM position because that’s all that’s important to the management,” he said. “Maybe in hindsight I can go back and say, ‘Look, really, you should really just drop a million off in a sports bag somewhere.’ That’s what they should do.”

Kyle and Jackie O are on holidays and will return to KIIS 106.5FM next week
