Radio ratings: Kyle and Jackie O smash Ben Fordham

In a shock result, 2GB’s Ben Fordham has been smashed by Kyle and Jackie O in the ratings with the duo now no. 1 on both AM and FM.

How well do Kyle & Jackie O know each other?

Kyle and Jackie O have stunned the radio industry by toppling 2GB’s Ben Fordham to become the number one Sydney breakfast show on both AM and FM.

It’s the biggest ratings result for the duo in their 21-year history.

Kyle and Jackie O have been FM leaders for years, but they’re always behind both 2GB and the ABC on the AM dial.

In fact, 2GB has had a stranglehold on the title of ‘Sydney’s top-rating breakfast show’ for more than 15 years.

But not anymore.

In the latest round of radio ratings which were released today, KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O went up a massive 2.6 points to record a 15.5 per cent audience share.

They’re now ahead of Ben Fordham on 2GB who dropped 0.2 points to record a 13.3 per cent audience share and the ABC’s Robbie Buck and Wendy Harmer who dropped 1.2 points to record an 11.9 share.

In a statement to news.com.au this morning, Kyle said: “I’m thrilled at having our biggest result ever in the 21-years that Jackie and I have done the show together. The result comes down to the show’s broad appeal with both the young hip listeners and the on-their-way-out oldies enjoying what we’re doing. A special shout-out today to the radio executives that told Jackie and I in 2013 that our show had peaked and would no longer rate. Thank you to most of our listeners for making this the greatest show in the world.”

Jackie O added: “I think I’m still in shock. What an amazing result! We always dreamed of this day but weren’t sure it would ever come, well today is the day! 21 years of hard work has finally paid off. What an achievement for our show and the people working on it. I couldn’t be more proud.”

Although he’s still the number one AM breakfast show in Sydney, the result is a massive blow to Fordham who took over from Alan Jones’ top-rating show on 2GB just over a year ago.

Jones finished his remarkable radio career way ahead of the competition with a 17.9 per cent audience share. Since then, Fordham’s ratings went up slightly to 18.1 before they started to dwindle.

In the last round of radio ratings released in June, Fordham was still the number one breakfast show overall with a 13.5 per cent audience share, just ahead of the ABC’s Robbie Buck and Wendy Harmer (AM) who had 13.1 per cent, and Kyle and Jackie O (FM) who had a 12.9 per cent share.

Despite losing the top spot to Kyle and Jackie O, Fordham was as gracious as ever today, telling news.com.au: “Congrats to Kyle and Jackie. When the results came through, I contacted them straight away to say well done. They’ve worked hard over decades and deserve the win. We have no right to expect the number one spot. We’re new in the shift and have to work hard to earn the respect of the audience. But again, today is Kyle and Jackie’s day. They can enjoy a champagne or two on their holidays.”
