Radio host Ryan “Fitzy” Fitzgerald was caught off-guard by a listener’s emotional story today, fighting back tears as mum-of-three Jen divulged her difficult cancer journey over the past nine months.

The candid moment came as Fitzy and Nova breakfast co-host Michael “Wippa” Wipfli were naming the winner of a competition, calling Jen on-air to let her know she’d scored $1000 in cash and free tickets to the Jurassic World Dominion premiere.

But the celebratory tone shifted when Jen explained the devastating year she’s had.

Footage from the studio sees Fitzy enthusiastically congratulating Jen for the win, who first answered the phone with shocked cries of “Oh my god!” and “Are you serious?”

He then asked: “Have you ever won anything before, Jen?”

Jen responded through tears: “No. Do you know what? I’ve just been going through cancer treatment for the last nine months, and watching my 10-year old twin daughters and my 12-year-old son thinking that their mum’s gonna die … was just the worst thing ever.”

As Wippa’s face fell, Fitzy, wiping his eyes, sympathetically offered: “Oh Jen, we’re gonna look after you mate. We’ll look after you. You can take your whole family along to the premiere as well. You’re getting me upset, Jen.”

He added: “Well, hopefully this is a just a tiny little positive in your life at the moment.”

Thankfully, Jen went on to reveal things were looking up for her health-wise, but explained that the emotional impact on her family has been a struggle.

“I’ve had really good news that I’m coming towards the end of my treatment and the cancer is no longer in my body … it’s just the impact it’s had on the kids has really affected us,” she said.

It’s not the first time Fitzy has shed tears on his radio show.

In 2020, the former AFL player sobbed as he discussed the death of his dog Cooper, telling listeners he had decided to talk about it on air in a bid to encourage other men to talk about their feelings.

“It’s always been that old adage of men don’t want to show weakness but I think that’s bulls**t. I think we need to push that aside,” an emotional Fitzy said.

“We lost our dog Cooper yesterday. It happened really fast,” the radio star tearfully explained, describing the trip to the vet during which he was put to sleep.

“It didn’t hit until I got home because he’s not annoying me anymore. I just wanted him to annoy me,” he said through tears.
