Kyle and Jackie O’s small win in the latest radio ratings

The radio duo have had a small win in the most recent radio ratings - but what does this mean for their show in Melbourne.

ARN’s million dollar giveaway bore fruit for the KIIS FM Kyle & Jackie O breakfast show in the second radio ratings survey of the year with the duo lifting in their timeslot in the static Melbourne market.

The 0.7 per cent market rise delivered to the Kyle & Jackie O show a 5.8 per cent share of the breakfast market in the southern capital – giving the duo bragging rights to having toppled in-strife ABC-Melb for seventh most listened to breakfast show in that market.

It’s a result that will prompt another expenditure from KIIS FM marketers however as Kyle & Jackie O’s tongue-in-cheek billboards - “Thanks for making us the 8th most popular show” - are refreshed.

The survey results come a day after a belligerent Kyle Sandilands spat the dummy on air and threatened on air to “(pull) the carpet out...” in Melbourne “if we don’t rate better by the end of the year”.

“Let’s get one thing right here, and I’ve told our management this. We’re not going to super serve Melbourne and ignore our Sydney audience. You either glue on in Melbourne or you (LONG CENSOR BLEEP). One or the other.

“I’ll just take the show off, Melbourne. You can (CENSOR BLEEP),” he spat, sounding enraged.

The KIIS FM result was well below market leader 3AW (18.8, down 1.8), GOLD104.4’s Christian O’Connell (10.8, down 0.7), NOVA’s Lauren and Jase (10.2, up 0.1), FOX’s Fifi, Fev and Nick (8.3, down 0.1), SmoothFM (7.6, up 0.1), and Triple M’s Mick (Molloy) in the Morning (7.3, down 0.6).

The ABC’s breakfast duo, Sharnelle Vella and Bob Murphy, had another poor survey, delivering a 5.6 share slumping by 0.7, creating more headaches for ABC executives.

Overall 3AW continued to dominate the Melbourne market with a 14.1 per cent market share ahead of GOLD with 12.5 and SmoothFm in third place with 9.

In Sydney 2GB’s Ben Fordham had a strong survey with a 15.6 share (up 1.2), ahead of KIIS FM’s 12.3 (down 1.0 – which may in part be due to the focus on Melbourne), Jonesy & Amanda on GOLD101.7 (9.2, up 0.3), Fitzy, Wippa & Kate on Nova (8.6, down 0.1) and SmoothFm and ABC-SYD’s Craig Reucassel tying for fifth with 8.3.

2GB Mornings presenter Mark Levy also had a strong survey with a 15.5 share, up 2.0, while ABC-SYD host Hamish Macdonald dropped 0.2 to 6.2, another worry for under pressure ABC executive Ben Latimer whose Sydney shows were all down overall weekdays.

Triple J also had another horror survey, down 0.9 overall, and in every timeslot in Sydney to 3.0 share – just 0.5 ahead of ABC Classic on 2.5.

Across the day, talk station 2GB dominated with a 12.8 share (up 1.2) but find themselves in an increasingly tight battle with music station SmoothFM 11.8 (up 0.3).

KIIS FM dropped to a worrying single digit 9.5 share (down 0.4) to be third most listened to station, behind which came GOLD101.7 with 8.3 (static) and Nova with 7.7 (down 0.1).
