Reason behind Today host Brooke Boney’s shock resignation
Today host Brooke Boney has revealed the surprising reason she is leaving the breakfast show.
Today presenter Brooke Boney has announced she will leave the breakfast show in a matter of months to head to the UK.
Sharing the news on air on Friday morning, the former Triple J reporter revealed will leave the show after the 2024 Paris Olympics in July and August to study at Oxford University.
“Guys, I have some very big news for you this morning. I’ve been offered a place at Oxford University later this year, which means I’ll be leaving the show after the Olympics,” she said.
“I don’t want to go into too much right now, because there’ll be plenty of time for goodbyes and thank you, but I just wanted to share that good slash bad news with you all this morning.
“It’s been a dream of mine to be able to study at an overseas university, and it just felt like the right time to take that step.”
Boney will spend the next year at Oxford University where she plans on studying a Masters of Public Policy and “serving the community”, according to Channel 9.
“I thought if I don’t do this now, then I’m probably never going to. I am at that age where if I leave now and go and study and come back, I’ll still only be 38,” she told the outlet.
However, Boney who joined the team as a show business reporter in 2019 and became news presenter in January 2023, hasn’t ruled a return to TV in the future.
“I’d love to be able to come back and still do things with Nine and figure out what that looks like.”
She said presenting on Today has been “such a privilege”, which she could never in her “wildest dreams” have imagined for herself when she was younger.
“I think we are so lucky that we get to wake up every day and for the most part have fun together,” she said.
“We wake up and try to make other people happy and informed. I always joke and say if you’re not learning, you’re laughing. I think that’s true, that’s definitely what we do on set and behind the scenes, is we have a really good time.
“And we take the job so seriously. It’s such an important part of people’s day, getting them up to go to work or school or wherever they’ve got to go during the day.”
The morning show panel was overcome with emotion as the beloved presenter announced her departure on Friday morning.
“We are very, very proud of you,” co-host Karl Stefanovic said.
“So proud of you,” co-host Sarah Abo added.
“You know that you’ve wanted to do this for so long and to get a place at one of those universities, I mean, how does it feel?” Stefanovic asked.
“Its mixed emotions because I love coming in here. It’s the most fun job in the world … but I’m also really excited to see what’s out there in the world. Oh such a good opportunity, isn’t it?
“Oh, my head is spinning right now. My heart’s beating really fast.”
Viewers were quick to react to the bittersweet news on social media, with many expressing both their heartbreak and well wishes for the beloved presenter.
“You make the sun shine every day as we watch you here … congratulations (and) good luck,” one person wrote, while another fan commented, “We are all going to miss you. You are an inspiration.”
