No doubt her Today colleagues were among the most saddened by the news of Boney’s departure, which will be after the Olympics, in August.

“Can I say we’re going to miss you immensely? So much,” newsreader Alex Cullen said. “We love your humour. I’m going to miss that the most. I think you don’t know where the show is going to go sometimes, and you drive that a lot, which is huge. Hasn’t gone yet. No, I know, but I’m just saying we’re going to miss you, OK.”

Host Karl Stefanovic was just as emotional when he told her on-air: “It’s a big deal to break away from something as secure as this. Yeah, it is, and it’s to make your dreams come true. And to take that step, to bite it off is a testament to you as a person and says everything about you, and as Alex said, we’ll see you at the Olympics, but we’re going have one big party afterwards.”

Boney is leaving the show to fulfil her lifelong dream of studying at Oxford.

“I settled on the Masters of Public Policy because I thought this is sort of what fits best with my journalistic career thus far,” she said on the show. “I thought if I don’t do this now, then I’m probably never going to. I am at that age where if I leave now and go and study and come back, I’ll still only be 38.”

“That still leaves plenty of time to sort of carve out the next part of what my career is. I’d love to be able to come back and still do things with Nine and figure out what that looks like.”
