Post Malone drops $4.5m on LOTR trading card
The Sunflower rapper is now the proud owner of an extremely rare Lord of the Rings-themed card – but it came with an eye-watering price tag.
Post Malone has been revealed as the proud new owner of the highly-coveted One Ring … card, that is.
The rapper – and apparently huge Lord of the Rings fan – dropped a whopping $4.57 million ($USD2 million) on a special and extremely rare Magic: The Gathering trading card featuring themes from Middle-earth.
(If you’re not across it – Magic: The Gathering is a tabletop and digital collectable card game, and has been described by Forbes as the most complex real-world one in existence).
The one-of-one serialised One Ring foil print card, printed in the Black Speech of Sauron, was released earlier this year, sending fans into an absolute frenzy.
It eventually made its way into the hands of Toronto retail worker Brock Trafton – who opted to remain anonymous at the time but quickly retained a lawyer and PR team to help him manage ownership of the highly-valuable item.
“I find it was even crazier than the lottery,” he told the BBC. “I wanted to tell everyone, but I couldn’t. I had to keep it a secret. I didn’t even tell my dad.”
About a month later, and with several other offers on the table, Trafton was at his retail job when his PR called and told him: “You’re going to meet Post Malone, he wants to meet you, and take some pictures with the card.”
The Sunflower rapper is well-known for his love of M: TG – and Trafton said the meet-and-greet turned into an “unexpected” sale after Malone asked him what the current bid price was before offering to buy it.
“It wasn’t a plan to sell it to him, I wanted to show it to him because I knew he would appreciate it as much as I did,” Trafton told The Blast.
Trafton documented the life-changing meet-up and shared it on TikTok.
“Yeah, I’ll take it,” the rapper can be heard telling him in the video. “This is so cool. This is, like, the greatest sh** ever, dude.”
Trafton shared more details in the caption for the video.
“When I found the One Ring, the first person who came to mind was @Post Malone,” he wrote.
“I have played MTG since I was a kid and obviously it would be amazing to keep this card. “But for a guy like me, being able to sell it is life-changing. I just really hoped it would go to someone who would appreciate it as much as I do.
“This is my dream come true, meeting Post Malone and him buying the One Ring card from me is literally a moment straight out of a fairytale. Post Malone @Magic: The Gathering you have changed my life. Things like this don’t happen to people like me, I guess it’s magic. I am forever grateful.”
Malone’s love of Magic: The Gathering is well-documented: last year, he revealed on The Howard Stern Show that he’d spent $1.2 million (USD$800,000) on another extremely rare and sought-after collectable – the Black Lotus card.
He also recently collaborated with the company on a series of cards inspired by his music for their “Secret Lair” drop program.
Now that Malone’s building up his very expensive collection, it’s presumed he knows to “keep it secret … keep it safe” (sorry).
