Kim Kardashian accused of cultural appropriation for wearing hair in braids

Kim Kardashian West has yet again been accused of cultural appropriation for styling her hair in long braids.

North West makes rapping debut

Kim Kardashian is in hot water over her latest beauty look.

The 39-year-old SKIMS shapewear mogul shared several social media shots of her outfit for husband Kanye West’s Yeezy show on Monday in Paris, which included a full head of waist-length braids that matched her six-year-old daughter North West’s and seven-year-old niece, Penelope Disick. Kourtney Kardashian chose to wear her hair in a bun instead.

Many took issue with the star of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which is about to begin streaming its latest season on Foxtel Now, sporting a historically black hairstyle and were quick to share their thoughts with the star.

“YOU ARE NOT BLACK,” one person tweeted, while another wrote, “How does she keep getting away with it.” A third user chimed in with, “You think she’d learn. Put your hair up in a high pony and go to the fashion show like everyone else,” and yet another quipped, “cultural appropriation season 67.”

However, not all of social media was against her. Many users came to the reality stars’ defence.

The braids have sparked debate online.
The braids have sparked debate online.

“It’s 2020 we know it’s y’all culture. It’s a badass hairstyle and you don’t control the hands that braid it. On top of that, this is only an American issue. No one on earth besides African-Americans deem this cultural appropriation,” one person shared, while another asked, “Why are people so pressed because she wears braids?! Lmao just relaxxxx.”

She has previously come under fire for sporting cornrows both on the red carpet and in social media posts, sparking debate each time.

In a 2018 interview with Bustle, she addressed the issue, saying, “I (do) remember the backlash when I had the blonde hair and that I called them ‘Bo Derek braids.’ But I obviously know they’re called Fulani braids and I know the origin of where they came from and I’m totally respectful of that. I’m not tone deaf to where I don’t get it. I do get it … In no way am I ever trying to disrespect anyone’s culture by wearing braids.”

Kardashian is no stranger to being accused of such insensitivity.

In December, she attracted criticism online, with a flurry of negative comments on 7Hollywood’s Instagram page accusing Kardashian of “blackface”.

“Awful — who is on your editorial board,” one wrote, while another said, “Ya’ll are so wrong for this”.

Another added, “It IS NOT ok to pigment a caucasian woman’s skin in this way and act like its normal. This isn’t cool”, while someone else wrote, “Would you please stop with the blackface”.

In 2017, when she launched her KKW Beauty contour and highlight kits, she got immediate backlash for the campaign photo which showed her skin several shades darker than her natural skin tone.

“We wanted them really moody; it was really tan,” Kim said on her reality show at the time.

“I wanted to show the contour. The photos ended up being a little bit darker than I was.

“There were some people online saying I was doing blackface and the photos were inappropriate.

“The internet world is so toxic, and I feel like people are just waiting for you to make a mistake just to point out.”

She was also forced to change the initial name of her shapewear brand, Kimono, now known as SKIMS.

Kardashian was accused of cultural appropriation when she announced the launch of Kimono in June last year, before apologising and changing it.

A representative for Kardashian did not immediately respond to Page Six Style’s request for comment.
