Borat actor Sacha Baron Cohen explains why celebrities are flocking to Australia
Actor Sacha Baron Cohen said the influx of heavy hitting Hollywood stars to the country is because of Australia’s handling of the pandemic.
Sacha Baron Cohen has commented on a recent wave of Hollywood actors flocking to Australia amid the coronavirus crisis.
Baron Cohen, who is married to Aussie star Isla Fischer, told ABC News Breakfast the rush of stars to Australia shores is being driven by the Australian government’s “amazingly effective” COVID-19 response.
“This is one of the few countries in the world that really, the politicians stepped aside – whatever you want to think about the politicians – and said, ‘OK, let’s let the scientists run this show’,” Baron Cohen said.
“And it’s been amazingly affective. I really hope that it continues.”
The star also teased that he could be working on an Aussie character, speaking in a thick accent and joking, “I mean, you can’t make an Aussie character. There’s no comedy, here, mate!”

Baron Cohen said he hoped the recently released sequel to the first Borat film, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, had some impact on the recent US election.
“I mean, it was a plea for people to go out and vote. That’s actually how we ended the movie. Maybe the most impactful thing that it did was to discredit Rudy Giuliani,” he said.
“Although he’s done a pretty good job himself, since.
“The movie came out on the day of the final presidential debate, and on that day, Rudy Giuliani was giving over some fake information to discredit Joe Biden. And because the movie came out, everyone was talking about why Rudy Giuliani had his hand down his trousers.
“Did it affect the election? I hope so. That’s why I made it. That’s why I had to have it out before November 3. It’s why I put myself in some really silly situations.”
Baron Cohen has been married to Fisher for ten years after the couple first met at a party in Sydney.
The Confessions of a Shopaholic star told Marie Claire back in 2018 she’d fantasised about moving back to Australia, saying LA didn’t have a “culture of bringing your kids to dinner parties or to restaurants past 6pm”.
“I tend to entertain at home because I want to be with my family – it’s easier to put your kids to bed and have a wine with friends,” she said.
