Following the launch of its AI-centric Galaxy S24 smartphone range back in January, Samsung has today revealed a suite of new devices – and it’s once again betting big on its Galaxy AI.

At its Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris, the tech giant showed off latest versions of its Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip smartphones, complete with AI optimisation for the foldable form factors.

It also announced it would be bringing Galaxy AI across its entire portfolio of new products, finally showing off its hotly-anticipated Galaxy Ring, alongside the Galaxy Watch7 and two brand new products.

Galaxy Z Fold 6

The headliner was the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which Samsung says is its “slimmest and lightest Fold yet”. Weighing 239g, the Galaxy Fold 6 is 14g lighter than the Galaxy Fold 5, and only a couple of grams heavier than the flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra.

While the updates are fairly iterative, the phone comes with a new symmetrical design that’s squarer and sharper, and a wider front display and internal display, which Samsung has said will help “maximise productivity”.

The same Galaxy AI features seen on the Galaxy S24 series, as well as on other Samsung devices including the Galaxy Z Fold 5, also carry over to the Galaxy Z Fold 6. This includes the popular Circle to Search with Google feature, which can now translate text and solve mathmetics equations, while breaking down exactly how it did it.

Functions like Interpreter also now make the most of the dual screen form factor. The feature, which translates conversations between two languages in real time, allows one person to view the translation on the main screen, while the other party can view it on the cover screen.

There’s also a Sketch to Image functionality, which lets you draw something with the S-Pen and then use AI to generate it into a realistic-looking image, and a Portrait Studio feature which turns your photos into sketches, cartoons, etc, without needing to download a third-party app.

In disappointing news for Fold fans though, the camera configuration will stay the same as the previous two models, with the external cameras consisting of a 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide camera, and 10MP telephoto lens.

The front-facing cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 — a 10MP selfie camera and 4MP under display camera — also match last year’s model.

Inside, there’s a new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset (similar to what the Galaxy S24 uses) and a 4400mAh dual battery.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is available for pre-order in Silver Shadow, Pink and Navy, along with online exclusives Crafted Black, and White.

Prices for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 start at $2749 for the 256GB model, ranging up to $3299 for the 1TB model.

Galaxy Z Flip 6

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 comes equipped with all the same Galaxy AI features as the Galaxy Fold 6, with its dual screens also now optimised for the Interpreter function.

However, its upgrades are a little more substantial with the Galaxy Flip 6 boasting the most powerful camera in the Flip line so far. The device comes with a 50MP wide-angle camera, 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 10MP selfie camera – the same configuration as the base Galaxy S24.

The Galaxy Flip 6 also gets a longer battery life thanks to a 4000mAh battery, and features a vapour cooling chamber for the very first time to help keep the device cooler for longer.

The FlexCam gets a nice upgrade too, with an AI Auto Zoom function detecting subjects and zooming in or out accordingly to get the best framing for your shot.

There’s also generative and interactive wallpapers for the Galaxy Flip 6, which are wallpapers that change and interact with your touch or with movement of the phone.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is priced at $1799 for the 256GB model and $1999 for the 512GB model, with pre-orders now available.

Blue, Silver Shadow, Mint, and Yellow colour options are on offer, with exclusive colours Crafted Black, White, and Peach available on the Samsung site.

Galaxy Ring

Samsung’s worst kept secret is officially on its way – although Aussies will have to wait a bit longer to get it on their fingers.

While the Galaxy Ring is set to launch in the US on July 24, no Australian release date was officially announced at today’s Unpacked event. A Samsung representative told news.com.au that it’s hoped the Galaxy Ring will be available in Australia by the end of 2024.

The finger-based health tracker will be available in nine different sizes (ring sizes 5 to 13) and three colour options of Black, Silver, and Gold. The Gold is the standout from the line, although after a quick play with each of them, I did find that the Black was the least prone to obvious smudges.

At US$400 the Galaxy Ring isn’t cheap, however, unlike the Oura Ring Gen 3, it doesn’t require a subscription to use.

In addition to a bunch of health tracking and sleep tools, the Galaxy Rings supports a finger-tap gesture (in conjunction with a Galaxy Watch or phone) to take photos or turn off alarms.

It also features 10ATM of water resistance, an IP68 rating and a battery life of up to seven days on a single charge.

Galaxy Buds 3 and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro

The most surprising announcement of the day, however, was the new Galaxy Buds 3 line. While we were expecting the buds to make an appearance today, we weren’t expecting what we got – although we have seen something very similar before.

In a bold move, Samsung has departed from its previous earbuds designs and essentially offered Galaxy users an alternative to Apple’s popular AirPods Pros.

For the first time, the Galaxy Buds come with a stem (or ‘blade’ as Samsung is calling it) to make the fit more comfortable, and accommodate touch/swipe buttons for taking calls and adjusting music.

They also come with optional lights to let you know when they’re pairing.

Most notably, the Galaxy Buds 3 come with an Interpreter Mode which will allow for one way translation. If someone is talking to you in another language (for example, a tour guide), select the language you want a translation for on your phone, and the buds will theoretically deliver it into your ears.

Two versions of the buds will be available – the in-ear Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, and an open-type Galaxy Buds 3. Each pair will have the same features, though the Buds 3 pro will have a slightly longer battery life at up to seven hours, compared to up to six hours of listening time on the Galaxy Buds 3.

Both pairs will be available in White or Silver, with prices set at $299 for the Galaxy Buds 3 and $399 for the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro.

Galaxy Watch Ultra

The Galaxy Buds 3 aren’t the only product that feel familiar this year.

Samsung also showed off its very first Galaxy Watch Ultra, which has plenty in common with Apple’s Watch 2 Ultra.

Designed with sports fanatics in mind, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is Samsung’s most rugged Watch design yet, with an IP68 dust and water resistance and the ability to withstand extreme temperatures.

Its impressive features list also includes a precision dual-frequency GPS system that uses a pair of satellite signals, a customisable action button, up to 100-hours of battery life, and more advanced health and fitness tracking thanks to AI.

At 47mm, the Galaxy Watch Ultra won’t suit all wrist sizes, although it is still smaller than the Apple Watch 2 Ultra’s 49mm design.

Like the Apple Watch 2 Ultra, the Galaxy Watch Ultra also has a titanium casing, a wide range of health and fitness features, and is rated for 100 meters of depth underwater.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra is available now for pre-order in Titanium Silver, Titanium Grey or Titaunium White for $1299.

Galaxy Watch 7

Rounding out the new range of products, is Galaxy’s Watch 7 which is available in both 40mm and 44mm options.

The Galaxy Watch 7 benefits from a new processor and AI powered health tracking, and is the first Galaxy smartwatch to feature a dual-frequency GPS system for more accurate location tracking.

The 40mm model comes in both Green and Cream colourways, with pricing set at $549 for the Bluetooth version and $649 for the LTE version.

The 44mm meanwhile costs $599 for the Bluetooth version and $699 for LTE, with Green and Silver colour options available.
