Knowing the difference between high quality and low quality cookware can make a world of a difference in the kitchen.

While there’s a variety of cookware out in the market from stainless steel and cast iron to teflon and non-stick, there’s one type that’s become a household staple for many – ceramic cookware.

Stylish, sleek and naturally non-stick – many cooks have made the switch from traditional non-stick cookware featuring materials such as teflon to those made from ceramic because they distribute heat evenly, are easy to clean and ultimately, non-toxic.

However, there’s one common mistake people make when it comes to cooking or maintaining their ceramic cookware – using metal utensils.

Executive Chef of Sydney’s Franca Brasserie, Armorica Grande Brasserie and Pelicano, Jose Saulog says to “never use metal on it” as it will cause the ceramic coatings to chip or peel off and eventually lose its non-stick properties over time.

Ceramic cookware offers the high heat tolerance of stainless steel and the slickness of non-stick cookware without the toxic substances like polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), lead and cadmium. Plus, they are aesthetically pleasing in the kitchen – need I say more?

So if you’re ready to upgrade your cookware, we’ve rounded up some of the best ceramic cookware sets, pots and pans that will make your time in the kitchen less of a nightmare and more of a dream.

We highly recommend the Our Place Cookware Set that over 48,000 reviewers rate – shoppers have dubbed the four-piece set the “best investment” and a “game changer” as “nothing ever sticks to it – like magic”.

There’s also the GreenPan Padova 6 Piece Cookware Set that has been described as “sturdy” and “perfect” by satisfied shoppers.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING CERAMIC COOKWARE

When it comes to buying durable, high-quality ceramic cookware, these are the factors to consider when making your decision.

Material: Ceramic cookware is typically made with an aluminium or stainless steel core which is typically lightweight yet durable and effectively conducts heat evenly. You should look for ceramic cookware with a core made from either of these metals, and topped off with ceramic non-stick coating that’s free of harmful substances like PTFE, PFOA, (PFAS), lead and cadmium. Extra features you can consider include stainless steel handles and tempered glass lids.

Cookware set inclusions: It’s important to consider what pieces are included in ceramic cookware sets and decide whether they are all essential to have or not. There are cookware sets that can have as little as four pieces or as much as 14 – so it’s up to personal preference and if you have the space to store big cookware sets.

Cooktop compatibility: If you’re someone that has an induction cooktop, make sure the ceramic cookware you’re eyeing is compatible with all cooktops including induction as some aren’t induction safe.

Temperature range: Although ceramic cookware is often known to be used for low to medium heat cooking, it’s important to consider the temperature range that ceramic cookware can withstand. Especially if you plan on popping your cookware in the oven or broiler – most ceramic cookware brands will explicitly state the temperature range the cookware can withstand and whether it’s oven or broiler safe.

Ease of cleaning: Some ceramic cookware will not be dishwasher safe, so if you’re after low maintenance ceramic cookware – make sure it’s dishwasher safe. Otherwise, a gentle hand wash with warm water and a soft sponge will do the trick.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS CERAMIC COOKWARE?

Despite the name, ceramic cookware isn’t necessarily made from clay or kiln-fired. They typically are made from a metal base like stainless steel or aluminium, with a ceramic coating that is free of toxins and has natural non-stick properties.

“Ceramic cookware comes in different shapes and sizes and often bought due to them being aesthetically pleasing,” Chef Jose said.

“Ceramic cookware is perfect for stewing and braising. Especially for long oven braises – anything that doesn’t involve high heat cooking.”

IS CERAMIC COOKWARE SAFE TO USE?

Short answer: Yes.

Chef Jose says ceramic cookware is safe to use “as long as chemicals like PFAS aren’t present”.

Ceramic cookware is a healthier and safer alternative compared to teflon cookware that may feature harmful substances like PTFE, PFOA, (PFAS), lead and cadmium.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN CERAMIC COOKWARE?

“Ceramic cookware is best cleaned with warm soapy water using a soft sponge. NEVER a metal scour,” Chef Jose warns.

“If there’s a lot of food stuck, it is best to fill the cookware halfway with water and let it boil/simmer for 5-10 minutes, depending on the severity of the burn.

“Boiling or simmering water and baking soda also works well. However, none of these methods can ensure the restoration of burn marks.”

HOW DO YOU MAKE CERAMIC COOKWARE LAST LONGER?

To make your ceramic cookware last longer, Chef Jose said it’s important to “properly utilise the cookware” and shared the following tips:

  • Never use on extreme high heat for a prolonged period of time.
  • Soak, clean and dry properly.
  • Never use metal on it, be it a metal scrubby or metal utensils – similar to traditional non-stick coatings, ceramic coatings will also chip or peel off and lose their non-stick properties over time, so it’s best to use nonmetal utensils.
  • Always use wooden utensils and/or high-heat rubber spatulas.
  • Store properly individually and never stack them. If you do, use cardboard or heavy paper in between to avoid scratches.

It’s also worth noting that even though ceramic non-stick pans are made without using traditional non-stick materials, they should still be retired and replaced once they start to chip or degrade.
