EDITOR’S PICKS: BEST WATER FLOSSER

Panasonic Rechargeable Oral Irrigator/Water Flosser, $169 (down from $229) at Amazon Australia

Tried And Tested By Marina Tatas, news.com.au checkout Shopping Writer

When I got the opportunity to review the Panasonic Rechargeable Oral Irrigator/Water Flosser I jumped at the chance. It’s the first time I’ve ever used a water flosser but I’ve been dying to test one out ever since I saw them go viral on TikTok.

Bit of background – I really hate flossing. Like I’ll do it, but it’s not an enjoyable experience for me. Enter the water flosser.

This little gadget is so easy to use, comes with five pressure settings, depending on how strong you want the water to spurt out, and two different nozzle heads (one is more suited to those with braces).

This water flosser does a fantastic job at leaving my teeth and gums feeling so clean.

When you fill up the water tank, you get about 60 seconds of use, which I believe is plenty of time to get in and around your whole mouth. It takes about one hour to reach fully charged and I permanently leave mine on charge in its handy holder.

I also love that it’s waterproof and completely cordless, so the whole process of using it is super seamless – you can no longer say flossing is a chore with a gadget like this.

One thing I will say, that I personally didn’t know about, is that water flossers can get messy. Don’t make the same mistake I did and make sure your mouth is closed and pointed downwards into the sink at all times. Otherwise, you’ll have water splashing everywhere and a clean-up will be required.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A WATER FLOSSER

With so many different brands and models on the market, it can be hard to figure out the kind of water flosser you will enjoy using everyday. Here’s a few product points we evaluated when making this list:

Variety of Settings: Not all water flossers offer the same settings. You can find ones with multiple different cleaning methods and pressure settings, so if you’re worried about your teeth feeling too sensitive, opt for one that comes with a low pressure or sensitive cleaning mode.

Tank capacity: A bigger tank will mean you won’t have to refill it as often

Size: Due to the size of the tank, water flossers are generally bigger than electric toothbrushes and can take up considerable space on your bathroom vanity. Depending on how big your bathroom is, this is something to consider when buying.

Noise: We all don’t like anything that is overtly loud or noisy, especially in the morning or late at night, so this is another factor to consider.

Price: From our research, water flossers will usually sit somewhere between the $50-$500 mark. Obviously you can go for something cheaper, but it won’t come with all the bells and whistles of a more expensive option – something like this electric toothbrush and water flosser hybrid from Waterpik, priced at just over $400.

Water flossers are the type of product we regularly see discounted, especially at stores like Amazon, Chemist Warehouse and Shaver Shop.

In addition, our shopping team read hundreds of customer reviews and looked at test results and ratings from product review sites to find the best water flosser from premium to budget to help you find the right one for your needs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

To get a better understanding of how water flossers work, and how you can fit it into your oral hygiene routine, we spoke to leading cosmetic dentist and White Glo ambassador Dr. Aodhan Docherty.

HOW DOES A WATER FLOSSER WORK?

Dr Docherty recommends using a water flosser once per day, in combination with twice daily toothbrushing.

“Water flossers work by using water pressure to blast away bacteria and plaque from the teeth and around the gum lines,” he told news.com.au.

Dr Docherty also recommends starting on a low pressure, to make sure you feel comfortable using it.

CAN A WATER FLOSSER REPLACE TRADITIONAL STRING FLOSSING?

According to Dr Docherty, water flossers have been used for nearly 50 years, so it’s not necessarily a new practice.

He said water flossers are a “good alternative” for those with braces, dental implants, people who struggle to hold floss (like if you have arthritis) or even kids. That’s right, everyone can use a water flosser, even the little ones.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING A WATER FLOSSER?

Just like regular flossing, a water flossers works to remove chunks of food, sticky plaque and bacteria out of the mouth.

“They allow for fairly easy work and can be easier to hold than floss,” Dr Docherty said.
