HOW DO I CHOOSE AN ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH?

With so many models on the market, we decode some of the features and why they might be helpful for you.

Timer function

We all know we should be brushing our teeth for two minutes but sometimes this doesn’t eventuate. Having a built-in times on your electric toothbrush keeps you accountable and ensures you’re not skimping on your oral hygiene or over brushing which can lead to enamel damage.

Bristle variety

Although bristle brushes are the most common, you might have seen some silicone models on the market too. According to according to the Australian Dental Association’s Oral Health Promoter Dr Mikaela Chinotti, it’s a “matter of choice,” however silicone options like the Foreo ISSA 3 Electric Toothbrush claim their brush heads only require replacing every six months due to their bacteria resistant qualities.

Pressure sensors and app connectivity

A nice but costly option to have, some electric toothbrushes connect to your phone to give you feedback on your brushing style. Motion sensors inform the app to show you which areas you’re missing, as well as prompts to remind you to lighten your touch. Although it’s a nice option to have, so far the few models that have it, like the Oral-B Genius 9000 Electric Toothbrush, are on the pricier side.

Charging options

While most models come with a plug in charging mount, frequent travellers may benefit from a charging case with USB connectivity. They’re also a great option if you don’t have an available charging port in your bathroom.

IS IT WORTH USING AN ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH?

Yes – according to Dr Chinotti and Dr. Docherty, while it’s possible to get similar results with a manual toothbrush, their electric counterparts can be more effective at reaching all tooth surfaces.

“Research has shown that electric toothbrushes can give a better outcomes than the use of a manual toothbrush,” Dr Chinotti says.

To get the most out of an electric toothbrush, it’s important to use it in conjunction with daily flossing as well as a fluoride toothpaste.

“In the end it’s about how you use your toothbrush,” Dr Chinotti says, sharing a few more tips.

“Don’t apply too much force as brushing hard damages the enamel and replace the (brush head) every three months.

“If the bristles on your brush are splayed outside the sides of the base before the three month mark comes around, you may be applying too much pressure when brushing.”

There can be some disadvantages to using an electric toothbrush, but only if you misuse it (similar to its manual counterpart). Some include tooth sensitivity, gum recession and tooth damage. Thankfully, plenty of models come with pressure sensors and other features to help you brush the right way.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH?

The general advice is to replace your toothbrush (or in the case of an electric toothbrush, your brush head) every three to four months.

Dr Docherty says doing so helps to “keep the bristles fresh and reduces the bacteria build up”. Another good indication that it’s time to switch things up is if your toothbrush bristles are starting to look a little worn out and scruffy. It’s important to change them frequently to keep things as hygienic as possible and avoid damaging your teeth or gums.

ARE ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSHES MORE EFFECTIVE AT CLEANING TEETH?

According to Dr Docherty, yes. He says it is clear from all studies that electric toothbrushes are “more superior” that their manual counterparts.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING AN ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH?

Dr Docherty lists several benefits including:

  • Superior cleaning than manual brush
  • Less risk of “scrubbing” and damaging your gums/teeth,
  • The timer so you can keep track of how long you are brushing for

HOW LONG SHOULD I BRUSH MY TEETH WITH AN ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH?

Just like a manual toothbrush, you should brush your teeth for two minutes when using an electric one according to Dr Docherty.

DO ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSHES REQUIRE A DIFFERENT BRUSHING TECHNIQUE?

It depends what kind of electric toothbrush you are using says Dr Docherty.

“Oscillating brushes that spin around require you to hold your brush still on each surface for three seconds,” he says. Whereas, sonic brushes can be used in a similar way to a manual brush. He suggests simply holding it at a 45 degree angle toward the gum line and moving the brush in small circular motions.

IS A WATER FLOSSER AS GOOD AS FLOSSING?

Not only are water flossers as effective as flossing, they’re also generally easier to use. According to Dr Docherty, they are “handy” for people with dexterity issues, who would find regularly floss hard to hold, as well as people who find it hard to clean teeth, people with tight teeth, bridges, orthodontics and braces, and implants.

If you hate flossing and struggle to do it consistently, a water flosser may help you keep the routine. These small machines use a stream of water to remove plaque, leftover food and impurities in-between your teeth and are often recommended as a softer and more gentle alternative to traditional floss.
