Regardless of whether you’re just starting out or training for a marathon, a good pair of running shoes is key to a more enjoyable and comfortable workout.
So where do you start? THE ICONIC’s Performance Footwear Buyer, Steven Waterhouse, says it’s about assessing your running environment first and foremost.
“Beyond fit, some key questions to answer are where will I be running and how? This will help narrow down your choice to find a pair that not only provides an ideal fit but performs against the conditions you need to help prevent potential injury,” Steven tells news.com.au.
We’ve got our eye on the Asics Gel-Nimbus 26, the next generation of the TikTok-famous Nimbus 25 that had runners everywhere buzzing. Five-star reviewers love the comfort and support, with one saying it feels just like "walking on clouds".

Beyondfeel Women's Trail Running Shoe, $259 at Lululemon
Why we love it: Slim and light while still being super grippy and durable for uneven trails.
What to consider: Runs small.
Materials: Various | Colour: Grey blend, Green/linen blend | Drop: 9mm
Tried and Tested by Jessica Smith, Body+Soul Health and Wellness Shopping Writer
I got my hands on the Lululemon Beyondfeel shoes about a month ago, and my other runners have not seen the light of day since. (Sorry). With a super sleek fit, I love the way these look and feel on my narrower, longer feet (I'm a size 10 and bulky shoes always make me feel like I have clown feet). With a mesh upper, the shoes are slim and breathable at the top, while micro-dotted TPU overlays still keep your feet protected from debris while running through more rugged areas.
I spend a lot of time bushwalking and enjoy running on trickier terrain and have always been a little wary of slipping or tripping on uneven ground, but the high-abrasion rubber outsole with directional lugs is incredibly grippy. I always feel super supported even while walking or running uphill on rocky, uneven bush tracks, as well as on general road surfaces and easier paths — frankly, I feel like I can conquer anything with these kicks on.
The slim shape makes them easy to pack in an overnight bag, and the lightweight feel makes them feel effortless to wear even on longer walks or runs. Plus, the stylish colourways are cute enough to wear just out to coffee with my activewear. These shoes have me converted, big time.
Supernova Rise, $187 (down from $220) at adidas
Why we love it: Good entry-level trainer that’s lightweight and supportive
What to consider: The paler colours get dirty more easily
Materials: Sandwich mesh upper | Colour: Halo Blue/Zero Metalic/Wonder Blue | Drop: 9mm
Tried and Tested by Susannah Hardy, Partnerships Writer
I love running and am always on the lookout for bouncy and supportive trainers to enhance the experience — particularly for a reasonable price. So when the opportunity arose to test out the Supernova Rise from Adidas, I put up my hand faster than the men’s 100-metre final at the Paris Olympics.
And literally, the minute I put them on, my feet were rejoicing — and that was just in the office before I’d even been for a run. But then when I did venture out, I honestly felt like I was running on air. And it has been that way every time.
I find the combination of the thick foam and well-cushioned heel of the Supernova Rise extremely comfortable and energising. They actually make me want to run much further! They’re lightweight yet supportive and kind on joints even when running on tough, unforgiving surfaces such as concrete. I had a recent niggle in my right knee, which has now completely disappeared since I started wearing them.
I trialled the Halo Blue/Zero Metalic/Wonder Blue colourway and it looks super sleek, whether I’m out running the streets or simply ‘running’ around after my family — I never seem to take them off. The only downside to having a pale colour combo such as this, is that they get dirty easily, particularly the exterior front toe — I would definitely recommend spraying with a trainer protector.
However, as a regular runner, I definitely recommend these trainers. And I'm not the only one. I was talking about them with a friend in my cardio training session. Her 12-year-old son had the same shoes and had apparently said to her, ‘Mum, it’s like I’m walking on a cloud!”
My thoughts exactly.
ASICS Gel Kayano 31, $280 at THE ICONIC
Why we love it: Updated version of the beloved shoe
What to consider: Quite similar to the 30 so could buy the older version for a lower price
Material: Textile and synthetic | Colour: 10 options on the ASICS website | Drop: 9mm
What You Need To Know
ASICS has recently launched the 31st version of the cult Gel Kayano and just like its predecessors, the 31 does not disappoint.
Known for being incredibly stable, the Gel Kayano is the perfect shoe for all runners. The 31 is fairly similar to the 30 but there are a few differences. The main ones are that there is a new outsole material with extra grip and the upper is slightly more breathable.
Like earlier versions, the 31 is particularly good for those with flat feet who need extra support and comfort.
"The cushioning is just the right amount, the upper feels soft and the pull tab is a lifesaver for getting these on and off quickly and easily. They’ve survived a few hyrox sessions now and I’m enjoying how versatile these feel," wrote one five-star review.
Another said, "Kayano 31 feels like, I am floating on air. It supports your foot and helps land foot perfectly without having to worry about any shocks and after jog/run pain."
New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v13, $179.99 (down from $259.99) at The Athlete's Foot
Why we love it: Super bouncy
What to consider: Left blisters after first use
Material: Engineered mesh upper | Colour: Two options | Drop: 6mm
Tried and Tested by Claudia Coy, Social Media Producer
As someone who's only just started out on her running journey, I'll take any extra help I can get to motivate me in the morning. Enter: the New Balance's Fresh Foam x 1080 v13.
The best way to put it is that these feel like running on clouds. The foam midsole provides a whole lot of cushioning without making the shoe feel even the slightest bit heavy. However it's the solid rubber outsole that's the biggest game-changer. Dare I say, it even makes running sort of... fun. The bounce you get from the outsole is significant and it certainly made my humble 5km run more enjoyable and in turn, easier to get through.
In terms of support, the upper sole is made of a breathable engineered mesh which provides a snug fit without trapping any excess heat in. I also have quite a wide foot but didn't experience any discomfort around the toebox area.
My biggest tip with these shoes is to make sure you wear high-quality socks as I did experience some blistering on my arch, however, that's quite common when it comes to breaking in running shoes.

UA Women’s UA Velociti 3 Running Shoes,199.99 at Rebel Sport
Why we love it: Super bouncy
What to consider: Not great for those who need strong arch support
Material: Knit upper | Colours: Six | Drop: 8mm
Tried and Tested by Philippa Tonkin, news.com.au checkout Shopping Writer
Trying out a new pair of runners is always a little bit daunting. You hope for the best but you’re never quite sure if they will be right for you. This was definitely the case for me when I first popped on the Under Armour UA Flow Velociti 3 shoes. I’ve been a devoted ASICS Gel-Kayano fan for many years and wasn’t sure if these could live up to my expectations.
They’re super light when you first pick them up, a considerable difference to my ASICS joggers that feel like a brick in comparison. Sliding into them, I first noticed just how soft and cushioned the sole was. It definitely felt like I was walking with an extra bounce in my step. I also liked how the stretchy knit material hugged my foot in all the right spots. It wasn’t too tight but felt like just enough. I also tried them out on different surfaces like grass, footpath and sand at the beach and thought they worked well on all three.
I have very flat feet and did notice my foot rolling in a bit more than I would have liked, meaning the arch support wasn’t quite what I need. I also have quite small ankles at the back and noticed my foot was slipping out a little bit with each step. I wasn’t sure if this was just me though so I had a friend try them out too. For context, she has a very high arch and doesn’t need the same support that I do. She had no issues with the arch support and her feet weren’t rolling in and nor were they slipping out at the back either. She was a big fan.
Overall, I did love just how bouncy the shoes were and if you’re lucky and don’t suffer from flat feet like me then you will definitely love these shoes.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING RUNNING SHOES
When choosing running shoes to include in our list, we evaluated several factors:
Sole: A supportive sole really makes or breaks a shoe. A strong grip and a cushioning midsole are two things you can not look past.
Arch support: Whether you have low or high arches, support here is crucial to a comfy run.
Width: If you have wide feet then you'll know the feeling of a too-tight shoe. Similarly, for those with narrow feet, a too-wide shoe will not hug you in the right places.
Material: Is the shoe waterproof? Is it made of breathable materials? These are just two of the questions we considered when it came to the material of the shoe.
Durability: Will the shoe last after runs through rough terrains and weather?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A ROAD RUNNING SHOE?
First things first, it’s important to consider the size you go for with a pair of joggers. Opting for half a size bigger than your usual shoe size can allow for any “swelling or expansion” you might encounter as you speed along, according to Waterhouse. Then ensure you pick a pair with extra padding to absorb the shock of the concrete you’re running on.
WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A TRAIL RUNNING SHOE?
Unlike predictable pavement, the beauty of trail runs is that you’ll be encountering everything from slippery rocks to gravel. To ensure you’re safe on any terrain, selecting a pair of trail run shoes with added grip and ankle support is crucial.
WHAT IS A HYBRID RUNNING SHOE?
With the cushioning required for a comfortable pavement pound and the grip and stability of trail run shoes, these clever pairs will see you through any terrain.
