Are slides and sandals supportive for feet?
The Running Room physiotherapist Patrick McNamara told news.com.au checkout while some styles of slides have a slightly raised arch to give an impression of support, they are designed to be worn as quite minimalistic footwear, and are generally not so supportive.
“Slides require some degree of intrinsic foot muscle engagement to keep the slides on your feet, so your feet are “working” to keep the slides on,” he said.

McNamara said that if you find slides to be comfortable and you enjoy walking long distances in them, then it’s completely fine to do so.
“Some people find their feet and toes have to ‘grip; for the slides to stay on, and that generally isn’t comfortable for long walks,” he said.
What are the best materials to look for in slides?
When selecting certain materials in men’s slides, McNamara said it really depends on their intended use.
“There’s no better or worse,” he said,
“Some leather and suede slides may have a dressier appearance, though soft rubber compound slides are often softer, giving the impression of comfort.”
Are there any particular brands or styles you might recommend?
There are some great brands and products available on the market right now, from Birkenstocks to Crocs, Speedo to Adidas, but it ultimately comes down to personal preference.
While there’s no particular brand McNamara is a fan of, he recommends trying on different styles to find what suits you best.
“Some prefer softer materials with more cushion, some prefer a firmer slide with a higher arch,” he said.
“Comfort and fit is highly subjective, so go with what feels best.”
