T-shirts are the undeniable MVP of a man’s wardrobe.
A great tee can dress things up, take things down a notch, and they’re a great way to show off your personality and sense of style.
GQ Head of Brand Gladys Lai agrees that the best thing about a T-shirt is its versatility.
“Go with a simple pair of jeans, a belt, white socks and loafers for the daytime, and dress it up with a blazer and baseball cap if the event calls for it,” she told news.com.au checkout.
“You could also easily wear it to a more formal occasion by tucking it into some tailored trousers, and layering it under an overshirt or a matching jacket.”
And luckily, there’s lots of options out there to choose from, whether it’s a printed tee like the Uniqlo KAWS + Warhol T-shirt, a never before seen collab between two of the most popular artists of our time or something a little more classic like Dickies’ Heavyweight Tee.
We’ve also tried out a number of popular options including the Uniqlo U 100% Cotton Crew Neck T-shirt (actually our top pick) to help make your wardrobe shine.

Uniqlo U 100% Cotton Crew Neck T-shirt, $19.90 from Uniqlo
What You Need To Know
It’s been more than 10 years since Uniqlo opened its first Australian store in Melbourne and the love affair with this fashion brand is getting stronger by the year.
We love Uniqlo’s U 100% Cotton Crew Neck T-shirt. It’s designed in Paris and as one of the brand’s bestsellers it’s easy to understand why.
Made from high quality cotton, it comes in a great range of casual block colours to help compliment any outfit, and features fabric that gets better and better after each wash.
Tried and Tested by Troy Nankervis, news.com.au checkout Shopping Writer
I’m a big fan of Uniqlo’s U 100% Cotton Crew Neck T-shirt and have a number of colours in rotation, including black, white and grey.
I like that it’s slightly oversized (a pretty popular cut right now) and it’s a high performer in a number of settings, both at work and our socialising in my down time.
The fabric is more heavy duty too compared to other brands I’ve worn in the past, pairs well with an overshirt, and looks great with both jeans and chinos.
I’ve found after multiple washes it has kept its structure and integrity.
And at such an affordable price point, you don’t get much better than this level of quality in this price bracket.

Tried and Tested by Troy Nankervis, news.com.au Shopping Writer
It’s great when a product performs as advertised.
The Dickies Heavyweight Tee is comfortable and looks great in tandem with other clothes in current rotation.
Being from Melbourne originally, I usually wear a lot of black, white and greys, but I branched out into some brighter colours and have been wearing this tee in both the Baltic Blue Heather and Burgundy Heather.
They’re very well made and the fabric is quite lightweight, and not as heavy as Uniqlos’ U 100% Cotton Crew Neck T-shirt.
There’s a lovely texture to the fabric, and while I don’t really use the chest pocket, that’s a nice touch too.
I’ve also washed these a few times now and they keep their shape and colour which I’m also really impressed with.
Expect a slightly relaxed fit and you won’t be disappointed.

This exclusive collection ties in with the first ever KAWS + Warhol exhibition at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh in 2024.
But you don’t have to travel all the way to the United States to get amongst it with this tee, which is sold as a unisex design, and comes along with three other styles in the range.
As well as tees, the capsule collection has sweatshirts, coach jackets, socks, tote bags, a kid’s range and even an art book.
Tried and Tested by Troy Nankervis, news.com.au checkout Shopping Writer
OK, so this KAWS + Warhol collab has some really fun pieces.
The feel of the cotton is really nice and high quality, and the KAWS character on the print is quite quirky, it’s a little bit like a surreal version of the Sesame Street Cookie Monster.
And as with other Uniqlo tees, the fit of the garment is really nice too, and it’s stylish without trying too hard.
Looking forward to styling this one alongside other tees in my wardrobe.

With a lot of black, white and grey shirts in my wardrobe, I decided to branch out and try both the green and black polo shirt from the Amazon Essentials range, and I’m really happy with it.
The cut is quite fitted around my torso, I think if it was more snug I’d be swapping this one out for the next size up.
However I don’t feel constricted wearing this polo, and have room to breathe.
For the price, I think the quality is pretty good, and I can see myself wearing this both during and after work.

Amazon is branching out with its own Men’s Essentials collection and these crew neck tees deserve your attention.
Designed as a slim fit and made from soft organic cotton jersey, these are perfect as an undershirt or worn in their own right too, and come in both white or black.
Tried and Tested by Troy Nankervis, news.com.au checkout Shopping Writer
I was unsure of the quality of the Amazon Essentials Men’s Crew Neck but have been impressed so far.
Yes it’s pretty no frills, but at $49 for a 6 pack, this Essentials pack is excellent value for money.
I’ve been wearing these mainly as undershirts but as the weather warms up I’ll put them in rotation with my other tees as well.
As a slim fit, they hug my torso a little more than what I am used to, but if you do like the fitted style, these are a great option.
WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A MEN’S T-SHIRT
Fit: When picking a T-shirt you should be thinking about how it fits, which will also relate to its comfort. As a general rule, A classic tee should sit nicely across your shoulders, and strike a balance between being slightly fitted and loose.
A slim tee will be more snug to wear, while an oversized tee will have more room to move. Whatever fit or cut you go for, a great tee will show off the best features of your body, and make you feel great.
Fabric style: A wardrobe staple, you’re likely wearing a T-shirt all day so the style of fabric plays a really important role here. Most tees will be made from cotton or a cotton blend, which is highly durable and breathable, plus soft to touch.
It’s also common to see products with 100 per cent organic cotton. Some will also come with a blend typically polyester but we’re also seeing more T-shirts made with a bamboo blend, which is soft to feel.
Style: Tees are an opportunity to show off a sense of personality and style, so go for options that really speak to you, or also if you feel like you want to step out of your comfort zone a little too.
Basic tees come in block colours and it’s great to have a few in colours like black and white so you can interchange them with other items in your wardrobe. Alternatively, printed tees and polos can also work as statement pieces, allowing you to build a look around them.

We also spoke with GQ Head of Brand Gladys Lai for her best tips and recommendations when it comes to picking a new tee.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How should you choose a great men’s T-shirt?
GQ Head of Brand Gladys Lai said you need to get clear on what you’re looking for first before you start picking products that could be a match.
“There are a few personal preferences you should get straightened out before you choose a T-shirt, like the weight of the fabric, as well as the general cut of the shirt, whether you like it longline or cropped,” she told news.com.au checkout.
“I prefer when shirts are a little more fitted, and cut to the hip, as I think it’s a style that pairs well with most kinds of bottoms—too oversized, and it’ll take over as a statement piece.
“Look for a heavyweight cotton if you’re in the market for an everyday tee, but there are also lighter weight fabrics like silk and mesh available for tees suited for dressier occasions.”
Are there particular styles or designs that are popular right now?
Right now, it’s all about the white tee - and thankfully, our wrap has a number of great options in white, including H&M’s Regular Fit Tees, and Uniqlo’s U 100% Cotton Crew Neck T-shirt.
“Thanks to The Bear, the white T-shirt that Jeremy Allen White’s Carmy wears has surged in popularity,” Lai added.
“If you want it, it’s the organic cotton white tee from Merz b. Schwanen.”
What are some great quality brands of men’s T-shirts to consider?
There are many great labels out there who’ve carved out a name for themselves when it comes to tees. Dickies, Carhartt, Adidas and Thrills are all worth your attention.
“Uniqlo does a great men’s T-shirt (Tyler, the Creator is famously a fan), as well as Everlane, Buck Mason, Lady White and Aussie label Haulier,” Lai said.
How many T-shirts should you have on rotation in your wardrobe?
There’s no magic number, it really comes down to personal preference, but of course there’s a few little suggested guidelines to be getting the most out of your wardrobe.
“The sky’s the limit,” GQ Head of Brand Gladys Lai told news.com.au checkout.
“But you should have at least one staple white tee that you have to fall back on. As for statement T-shirts, own as many as you want!”
Are cotton T-shirts considered the best?
Lai said that cotton is a favourite for a very good reason, and that’s because: “it’s affordable, comfortable, and suitable for basically everything.
“But there are also times when cotton won’t be the best fabric, like in summer, when you’ll be in search of something that’s a little more sweat-friendly, like silk or something mercerised.”
