“You want to consider fabric and craftsmanship. Higher-end materials like merino wool, cashmere, or alpaca will generally push the price up another $150 to $350, but they’re worth it for durability and warmth,” she said.
What are the best ways to care for different kinds of sweaters?
“Caring for sweaters really depends on the fabric. For wool and cashmere, always hand wash or use a gentle cycle with cold water, and avoid wringing it out, let it air dry flat to keep its shape,” Bridgette said.
“Wool especially benefits from occasional steaming to remove wrinkles without damaging the fibres. For cotton or synthetic blends, machine washing is usually fine, but be sure to dry them on low heat or air dry to prevent shrinking.
“A good tip for all sweaters: store them folded, not hung, to avoid stretching the fabric out. And for extra longevity, consider using a fabric shaver to keep them looking fresh.”
