With winter just around the corner, staying warm doesn’t mean sacrificing style – great winter fashion starts with the right essentials. At the top of the list? A quality men’s sweater.

A true wardrobe staple, the humble sweater comes in a huge variety of options, from bold prints to classic neutrals, lightweight knits to chunky textures.

One standout option this season is Uniqlo’s 100 per cent Cashmere Sweater, available in an impressive range of 15 colours, including Olive, Blue and a rich burnt orange. While cashmere often comes with a hefty price tag, this pick is surprisingly affordable at just $129.90.

Bridgette Sredojevic, Creative Director from The Style Agency notes that while oversized fits and chunky knits are trending right now, classic lightweight styles, like a slim or regular-fit merino wool crew neck, remain timeless wardrobe staples.

“Sweaters are the kind of piece that never goes out of fashion. The current trend leans towards bold styles with earthy tones and a pop of colour, like mustard or deep green, but a well-fitted merino sweater is the ultimate versatile wardrobe staple,” she told news.com.au checkout.

“Perfect for those crisp autumn days on our doorstep, it can be worn on its own for a simple, stylish look or layered under a blazer for a more refined, yet relaxed vibe.

“And the best part? Almost every good menswear brand will have one in their repertoire, making it an easy find no matter your style or budget. Whether dressed up or down, it’s all about that perfect balance of comfort, warmth, and effortless style that transcends seasons and trends.”

So if you’re on the hunt for the perfect sweater to elevate your winter wardrobe, you’re in luck.

We’ve also rounded up the best men’s sweaters available now, like the Van Heusen Cotton Quarter-Zip Sweater (under $100 at THE ICONIC), the Rodd & Gunn Merrick Bay Knit ($179 at Myer), and the M.J. Bale Calder Cable Crew Knit in Ivory ($149.95 at Myer).

WHAT DO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A MEN’S SWEATER

Material and Fabric: The choice of material is important as it influences the sweater’s warmth and comfort, plus how you wash and care for the garment. Wool and cashmere are excellent for colder climates due to their insulating properties, while cotton offers breathability and is suitable for milder weather. Synthetic blends can provide durability and elasticity, making them ideal for active wear. Consider the care instructions for each material, as some may require hand washing or dry cleaning.

Fit and Comfort: The fit of a sweater affects both its appearance and comfort level. A slim fit offers a modern, tailored look, while a regular fit provides more room for movement. Oversized sweaters can be cozy and stylish, depending on the occasion. Ensure the sweater fits well across the shoulders, chest, and arms, and check the sleeve and body length to avoid any discomfort.

Style and Design: Sweaters come in various styles, such as crew neck, V-neck, turtleneck, cardigan, and half-zip. Each style offers a different aesthetic and can be suited to different occasions. Crew necks are versatile and classic, while V-necks can be more formal. Turtlenecks provide extra warmth and sophistication, and cardigans offer layering options. Choose a style that complements your wardrobe and personal taste.

Colour and Pattern: The colour and pattern of a sweater can impact its versatility and how it fits into your existing wardrobe. Neutral colours like black, gray, and navy are easy to pair with other clothing items, while bolder tones and patterns can make a statement. Consider your personal style and how the sweater will co-ordinate with your other clothing pieces.

Price and Quality: Think about how much you want to spend in relation to the quality of the sweater. Higher-quality materials and craftsmanship often come with a higher price tag but can be worth the investment for durability and comfort. Look for well-constructed seams, quality stitching, and a good finish. Research the brand’s reputation and read reviews to ensure you’re getting a product that meets your expectations.

HOW WE CHOOSE PRODUCTS

With so many excellent options out there for a winter sweater, our team looked across social media and popular retail marketplaces like Myer and THE ICONIC to see what’s trending and what’s popular this season.

We also spoke with Bridgette Sredojevic, Creative Director of The Style Agency, Australia’s leading personal styling group, offering expert face-to-face styling services for men and women nationwide, as well as global online and virtual styling services.

Bridgette gave us her insights into what you should be looking for in a men’s sweater.

Shopping Writer Troy Nankervis also tried and tested a number of items featured in this piece, including the 100% Cashmere Crew Neck Sweater from Uniqlo, and Van Heusen’s Cotton Quarter Zip Knit Sweater, to review the fit, style and levels of warmth.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I approach buying a sweater?

When shopping for a sweater, Bridgette Sredojevic, Creative Director of The Style Agency, says that versatility should be your top priority.

“Start by considering your colour palette. It’s not enough to simply opt for basic neutrals like grey, navy, or black, it’s crucial to know which specific shades and neutrals work best for your complexion and overall style,” she told news.com.au checkout.

“For example, some people may look best in cool greys and deep navy, while others may shine in warmer tones like rust or taupe. Understanding your ideal colour palette ensures that your sweater not only complements your wardrobe but enhances your appearance as well.

“Next, think about layering. A light to medium-weight knit is perfect for layering over a shirt or under a jacket, making it a versatile choice year-round. For colder months, a chunkier knit offers both warmth and texture. Also, consider the fabric – wool is a classic choice for its warmth, while cotton or merino blends offer better breathability and comfort for layering.

“The key is to choose sweaters that are not only stylish but functional, with the right colours and materials to transition seamlessly between seasons and outfits. With the right sweater in the perfect shade, you’ll effortlessly elevate your wardrobe.”

How much should I budget for a quality men’s sweater?

When it comes to budgeting for a quality sweater, Bridgette says that $130 to $200 is in the middle of the range that’s “built to last and feels great”.

“You want to consider fabric and craftsmanship. Higher-end materials like merino wool, cashmere, or alpaca will generally push the price up another $150 to $350, but they’re worth it for durability and warmth,” she said.

What are the best ways to care for different kinds of sweaters?

“Caring for sweaters really depends on the fabric. For wool and cashmere, always hand wash or use a gentle cycle with cold water, and avoid wringing it out, let it air dry flat to keep its shape,” Bridgette said.

“Wool especially benefits from occasional steaming to remove wrinkles without damaging the fibres. For cotton or synthetic blends, machine washing is usually fine, but be sure to dry them on low heat or air dry to prevent shrinking.

“A good tip for all sweaters: store them folded, not hung, to avoid stretching the fabric out. And for extra longevity, consider using a fabric shaver to keep them looking fresh.”

How can I style a sweater for various occasions and settings?

Bridgette said that styling a sweater really comes down to how you layer and pair it.

“For a casual day, throw on a simple crew neck or V-neck sweater with jeans and sneakers – easy and comfy. Want to elevate it? Layer a fine-knit crew neck sweater under a blazer for a smart-casual look, or go for a turtleneck with a coat and Chelsea boots for those cooler days,” she said.

“For a more relaxed vibe, a crew neck sweater over a tee and paired with chinos gives you that cosy yet put-together feel. The beauty of a good sweater is that with the right accessories, like a leather belt or sleek watch, you can shift between laid-back and sharp without much effort.

What sweater materials offer the best balance of warmth and comfort?

When it comes to balancing warmth and comfort, Bridgette said that merino wool is one of the best choices. “It’s soft, breathable, and provides great insulation without being too bulky. Cashmere is another top contender, offering exceptional warmth and softness, though it can be pricier,” she said.

“For something that’s a bit more durable, alpaca wool is lightweight yet incredibly warm and hypo-allergenic. If you’re looking for something that’s easier to care for but still cosy, cotton blends can be great too – they won’t be as warm as wool but are breathable and soft, making them ideal for milder weather or layering.”

“The key is finding a material that works with your climate and lifestyle while still feeling great against the skin.

How long can quality sweater last?

“With proper care, a quality sweater can last years, we’re talking anywhere from 5 to 10 years, sometimes even longer. Fabrics like merino wool or cashmere, when treated right (think gentle washing, air drying, and proper storage), can hold up incredibly well,” Bridgette added.

“The key is avoiding things like excessive friction, hot water, or harsh detergents, which can weaken fibres over time. And of course, rotating your sweaters so they get a break helps too.

“The more attention you give to your pieces, the longer they’ll stay in great shape, keeping that cosy, fresh look season after season.”
