Warmer weather has the power to spark both excitement and fear into the hearts of women.
We applaud the bright prints and exciting new styles of summer but also dread the thought of having to trawl through piles of swimwear to find something that suits us.
The solution for anyone who hates trying on swimsuit after swimsuit in an unflatteringly lit change room? The humble one piece. Once viewed as the daggy cousin of the bikini, one pieces are enjoying a huge comeback this season after several years of the micro-bikini trend.
And there is one trend you will be seeing everywhere. According to personal stylist and wardrobe consultant Penelope Cadzow, this year cut-out one pieces will reign at the beach. “Cut-out sections and sheer panelling is a really sophisticated way to do sexy in a one-piece, without being too revealing,” she tells news.com.au.
From Australian-owned swimwear brand Seafolly, to cult favourite Bondi Born and Marks & Spencer, we’ve rounded up the best one pieces.

Why is a one piece a great swimwear option?
“Years ago the one piece was considered a more conservative style and there were few options available but so much has changed, and the one piece is now almost viewed to be as sexy as the two piece,” says Penelope. “A huge turnaround in this has been the changes in the styles - with fabulous details including sheer panels, cut-out sections, lower backs, multiple straps, even one-shoulder styles. There are also far more options for women needing extra bust support, or keen to shop sustainable fabrics to support the environment - and colour and print is everywhere.”
How can I style a one piece swimsuit?
“Try knotting a sarong at the front for a loose, floaty cover-up dress or skirt,” recommends Penelope. “You can’t go wrong with a linen oversized shirt in any colour, white usually being the most popular, too. Have the top few buttons undone, roll up the sleeves. Not only does this look sophisticated and stylish over swimwear, it’s also sun smart and practical.”
Why is black swimwear a safe bet?
“A black swimsuit is a sophisticated, classy, timeless option and even worth spending a little extra money on as you wont get sick of it (compared with a bold print or bright colour), it won’t date or go out of fashion, and it goes with everything.”
