Growing up in Australia, beach culture is synonymous with our national identity: we’re practically born with swimwear already on.

So what makes a great pair of men’s swimwear? Whether you’re surfing, swimming or sunbaking, you want it to look good, feel great, and go the distance.

These are among the considerations taken into account by volunteer surf lifesaver David Leslie when launching Aussie swimwear label Gali, a fusion of First Nations culture and sustainable swimwear for men.

“Gali swimwear is soft, it’s comfortable, and it’s a great blend between fashion style and actual usability. The product is something that you know you can take to the beach,” Leslie told news.com.au checkout.

“One of the key factors in how we chose the fabric was around its softness, another part was how the artwork was printed on the fabric.”

Another important factor when picking quality men’s swimwear is navigating all the different styles out there, from boardies to trunks to pool shorts.

Bondi Active’s Gradient swim trunks transition well from the beach to the gym, while pool shorts like Runaway The Label’s Havana Shorts can make for a fashionable evening look when paired with leather slides and a nice button up shirt.

You’ll also be catching waves all morning with these Quiksilver Men’s Highline Scallop 19” Board Shorts or Billabong’s Throw On Boardshorts, and swimming laps like an Olympian with these Speedos Men’s Eco Endurance Briefs.

Why We Love It: Made in Australia, a striking design and extremely comfortable

What To Consider: These have a more fitted cut

Materials: Recycled Polyester and Recycled Elastane | Size: XS to 4XL | Colour: Dark Green, Blue, White | Care: Cold hand wash, dry in shade, do not machine wash

Gali is an Australian men’s swimwear label that deserves your attention.

The quality and feel of their Lukarrara swim briefs, which are made with blended recycled materials, is really nice and a standout feature.

Designed in collaboration with Warlukurlangu artist Pauline Napangardi Gallagher, the Lukarrara swim brief print combines a geometric pattern of green, blue and white lines, inspired by how seeds fall to the ground and are subsequently gathered.

If you’re looking for a statement piece, these swim briefs really do “pop”. When I spoke to the label’s founder David Leslie, he said some styles in the range do change colour when wet or under different light conditions.

The moment they arrived in the mail I knew I was in for something special.

Taking them out of the packaging, the first thing I noticed was the premium fabric, which felt sublime.

Fast drying, durable and eco-friendly, I like how these Lukarrara swim briefs are made and printed in Australia on Gadigal land. Lots of thought has also been put into the customer journey from start to finish.

They’re more fitted than what I’d normally go for, but that aside, they’re super comfortable during my morning swims at my local beach.

There’s an excellent community initiative behind the swim briefs too, with Gali pledging 25 per cent of profits towards First Nations communities. This includes paying royalties to the artists involved with the design work, as well as donating $1 from every product towards community-led projects.

All in all, I’m really happy with the Lukarrara swim briefs, and have no hesitation recommending them.

My favourite thing about them is the clean navy and blue lines, which is a classic Euro look for pool shorts, making them great as a staple piece for your wardrobe.

These Vacay Swimwear Ischia Swim Shorts would be ideal for casual wear too, particularly if you’re away on holiday and packing light, in which case I’d be pairing them with a plain white or black tee.

Sitting on the mid thigh, I also think they’re a great length, and their quick-drying fabric is also a big selling point for me.

I’ve been wearing these swim shorts for a few months, and so far they’ve been going the distance.

Made with a Nylon and Spandex blend, the integrity and durability of the fabric is high, and the green colour gradient is really pleasing on the eye.

The one thing worth mentioning is that they’re quite fitted. Although that is not a deal-breaker, I prefer a looser fit when it comes to swimwear.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING MEN’S SWIMWEAR

Style: Swimwear isn’t just functional, it can make a statement. Whether you like wearing classic boardshorts, pool shorts, or a Euro-inspired swimming brief, your choice says a lot about your vibe. Are you going for athletic performance or more of a laid-back beach look? Pick something that lines up with your personal taste and a product that leaves you feeling confident.

Material: This is an important consideration, as the right fabric can make or break your swimwear. Quick-drying, chlorine-resistant materials like polyester blends or recycled fabrics are ideal. Not only will they hold their shape and colour, they’ll also perform well in and out of the water. If you’re a fan of ocean swimming, ensure your swimwear can handle salt water without stretching or fading after only a few dips.

Fit: I don’t know about you, but nothing ruins a day at the beach more than uncomfortable swimwear (well, sunburn is probably a close second). If you want the freedom to move, choose a more relaxed style. Elastic waistbands offer flexibility, while drawstrings help keep everything in place. And if you’re not keen on constantly adjusting both in and out of the water, steer clear of anything that rides up or sags when wet.

Price: Purchasing quality swimwear is an investment. You don’t need to spend huge amounts of money, but cheaper pairs tend to wear out faster. Look for brands that balance an affordable price point with durability. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to replace my swimwear after just one summer.

HOW WE CHOOSE PRODUCTS

At news.com.au checkout, we’re all about finding the best value deals and offers that balance affordability with great product features.

This extends to men’s swimwear, where we considered a number of factors such as the fit, comfort, durability, and how well swimwear holds up to salt, chlorine, and time at the beach.

We also spoke to Gali swimwear founder David Leslie for his expert opinion on what makes for great swimwear, and the kind of decisions you need to make in order to look and feel your best in the water.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can guys find a sense of style and personality with their swimwear?

Gali swimwear founder David Leslie recommends looking for brands and labels which resonate with your personality and values.

“Looking at a brand, ask yourself what it stands for, and do the values of the brand align with yours,” he explained.

“It’s then really testing this out, and once you’ve found a brand that you know that you like, testing their actual products. A lot of brands will have different styles, different sizes and different cuts, so (it’s about) seeing what works best for you and for what you’re looking to use it for.

“Also consider what looks and feels good on you. Much of it comes down to you. Does the product that you’re actually wearing help you make you feel confident as well?”

How should you pick sizing in swimwear?

Go with your usual waist size, however Leslie recommends always checking the brand’s sizing chart. If you’re between sizes, choose a size up for a more relaxed fit or a size down for a snug look.

“We have two different types of cuts with our swimming briefs and it’s mostly based on the side width. But what we find with some customers depends on what they’re actually using the swimwear for,” Leslie said.

“The types of conversations we are having with customers is, ‘how will this fit and how will this actually look on me?’ And then it’s more about what’s the best size and what’s the best price point for them to choose.”

What kind of swimwear material should you buy?

“There’s a lot of variety in terms of the different fabrics out, and different fabrics will look different on somebody’s actual body,” Leslie said.

“With Gali swimwear, we’ve gone for a polyester base fabric so that we can print on the actual fabric. It really depends on what the customer is looking for. Whether they’re looking for something that’s beachwear, or you relaxing by the pool, the fabric choices may be a little bit different.”

How should you wash or care for swimwear?

In most cases, Leslie said you should be rinsing swimwear in cold water after every swim — salt and chlorine are brutal on fabric.

“Hand wash with cold water after use, and to dry it in the shade, and not within direct. Check the washing instructions, some designs may not be suitable machine wash or tumble drying,” he detailed.
