While the skinny jean will always have a place in our hearts (and wardrobes) according to May data from The Iconic, shoppers have drifted to baggier and more voluminous styles.

From the 70s revival to the high-cut pair of jeans you can wear for all occasions, here were are the best-selling denim styles you’re going to want to ‘add to cart’ this winter.

THE MUM JEAN

A little bit slouchy with just the right amount of shape for a flattering fit, the mum jean – or ‘mom jean’ – is the late 80s inspired cut that’s making a comeback. Although they’re high-waisted, they generally sit a little looser and have a relaxed tapered leg, making them less restrictive than a skinny jean.

In their former heyday, they were loved by the likes of Princess Diana and Madonna and they’re now the favoured fit of influencers and celebrities everywhere.

THE CROPPED STRAIGHT LEG

While straight-leg styles are similar to the mum jean, their key point of difference is in the cut of their leg. Whereas mum jeans are tapered, straight-leg jeans are a similar width from your thighs to your ankle. The style looks cleaner and more tailored than the baggier mum jean and

Featuring an ultra-high waist and cropped leg, The Iconic also listed Levi’s, Ribcage Straight Ankle Jeans, $149.95 in the washes ‘Tango Fade’ and ‘Georgie’ in their top-five selling denim styles.

If you want to take a note out of Kylie Jenner’s wardrobe, Levi’s ‘Wedgie Fit Straight Jeans, $139.95’ have earnt a reputation for their universally flattering and butt-lifting abilities after the billionaire modelled them on her Instagram. The jeans are said to separate the cheeks (thus the name) through some clever stitching and the high-waisted cut and subtle tapered leg offers a flattering shape.

They’re a versatile style and would look great teamed with a baggy sweater and sneakers or dressed up in a blazer and heels.

Also, don’t worry, despite the name they don’t actually give you a wedgie. As someone who owns three pairs of the style, I solemnly swear this to be true.

THE 70s FLARE

The saying is true: everything old does become new again... case in point, flared jeans. While the likes of Farrah Fawcett, Jane Birkin and Cher were the early adopters, the style has more recently been seen on celebrities like Miranda Kerr, Selena Gomez and Kate Bosworth.

If you’re worried about getting drowned out by a floor-length flare – it is a lot of fabric – than a cropped wide-leg pair will give you a similar style. It’ll also save you a trip to the alterationist if you’re on the shorter side, which is always a win in our books.

Because the style has so much volume, consider playing with proportions with something more form-fitting up top. Turtleneck sweaters, structured shirts and ribbed knits are all great options.
