Brat summer guide: 2024’s latest TikTok trend
In years gone by, the word had serious negative connotations but thanks to one pop star, it’s well and truly on the way up.

That’s brat.
If you've spent any time on the internet or around Gen Z in the past couple of weeks, it’s a term you’ve probably heard once or twice. Thanks to Charli XCX’s hit new album, Brat, released on June 7, the word, and it’s related term ‘brat summer’ have skyrocketed to insane levels of popularity.
BUT WHAT DOES BRAT ACTUALLY MEAN?
Essentially, it’s about living a carefree, messy life and is the complete opposite of the previous clean girl and current ‘so demure, so mindful’ trends.
Brat summer is all about being your true self and accepting your flaws while embracing the chaos.
Charli herself further explained the term in a TikTok video.
“You’re just like that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes. Who feels herself but maybe also has a breakdown. But kind of like, parties through it, is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile. Like, does dumb things. But it’s brat. You’re brat. That’s brat,” she said.
HOW TO BE BRAT
Ok, now that you know what the trend is, how can you actually embody it?
The album cover is neon green so embracing “brat green” is a good place to start. Also, think party-girl vibes so smudged eyeliner and grungy street style.
In another TikTok, Charli said a strappy white tank top with no bra is also giving major brat vibes.
Essentially, it’s about wearing whatever you want and not caring what anyone else thinks. Sounds pretty good to me.
