The Aussie brand behind the viral coffee scrub knows a thing of two about body care.

When natural beauty brand Frank Body launched its Original Coffee Scrub a little over ten years ago, it became an instant bestseller for leaving skin “silky smooth”.

Since then Frank Body has grown to a cult favourite face, body and hair care range.

The current bestseller is the Glycolic Body Scrub ($28), with over a million units being sold since it launched over a year ago.

“It sold out five times globally and we even launched four waitlists to keep up with the demand,” Ms Hatzis revealed.

The product is a chemical and physical exfoliant made from glycolic acid, witch hazel and niacinamide.

On their website, the best-selling buy has over 1000 five-star reviews with shoppers calling it a “MVP” and a “magic worker”.

“I noticed a difference after the very first use. The creamy formula was easy to rub into my skin and it didn’t feel too rough or gritty. I use this a couple time a week and my skin has never looked better,” wrote one five-star review.

It’s also beloved on TikTok with dozens of videos detailing how the product saved their skin. TikToker @morganmcguirept2 says she “can’t recommend (it) enough” and similarly @brittanilancaster says that it has “helped (her) so much”.

Besides the Glycolic Body Scrub and the second best-selling Clearing Body Wash, Frank Body has expanded the range with a Hydrating Body Wash, Nourishing Body Wash, and Brightening Body Wash, all retailing for just $14.

FROM IDEA TO LAUNCH IN SIX MONTHS

Turning discarded coffee grounds into a multimillion-dollar skincare business sounds like a wild idea, but that’s exactly what the founders of brand Frank Body have managed to achieve.

Jess Hatzis along with friends and co-founders Bree Johnson, Erika Geraerts, Steve Rowley and Alexander Boffa launched the company in 2013 with only $5000 and ten years later, have turned their simple idea into a dazzling success, with annual sales reported to be around the $20 million mark.

It all came to mind when Mr Rowley, who is the owner of several Melbourne cafes, was approached with a rather unique request from his customers: they were looking for leftover coffee grounds they wanted to use to exfoliate their skin. Intrigued by this, Mr Rowley told his friends and tried it out — only to realise it worked wonders and was a business opportunity too good to pass on.

”It made our skin so instantly smooth,” Ms Hatzis told news.com.au. “We had never experienced anything like it. We thought that if we felt this way, maybe others would, too.”

The brand’s success didn’t come from pure luck; a lot of it can be credited to the co-founders’ experience at Willow & Blake, a creative agency founded by Ms Hatzis, Ms Johnson and Ms Geraerts two years prior, which they still run to this day.

Ms Hatzis admitted that if it wasn’t for the team’s collective skill set, they wouldn’t have been able to launch in a short six months — and do it entirely through social media channels and word of mouth.

“The many years we spent working on other brands and learning how to properly position them in the market and on social media was crucial to being able to do this. Without that knowledge and approach, it would have taken six years [to launch].”

From the very start, Ms Hatzis and her team had a clear business plan in mind:

“We wanted to create a brand that broke all rules,” the entrepreneur explained.

“One we knew would cut through and connect with customers, one that was truly original in both the way the brand was presented and communicated with customers, and also in the marketing channels it used by forgoing expensive and traditional methods for new, innovative ones.”

“We knew what worked, what didn’t and just how hard it was to find well-formulated products at an affordable price.”

And this certainty translated from day dot. The brand “took off on social instantly” and currently boasts an enormous fan base of 783,000 followers on Instagram alone, largely thanks to their clever, witty online persona named Frank.

LAUNCHING THE “LEGACY PRODUCT”: THE ORIGINAL COFFEE SCRUB

It was the Original Coffee Scrub that put Frank Body on the map, which “was an instant sellout over ten years ago”.

Retailing at $20, this all-natural, vegan orange-scented scrub is made from a blend of coffee, vitamin E and antioxidant-rich oils to tackle a range of skin concerns. After a single use, the product claims to immediately tighten, brighten and even out the skin.

But it’s not all talk and marketing. In fact, there are over 4270 five-star reviews from customers – new and returning – who have testified to the product’s greatness.

“I will not stop talking to everyone I meet or know about how amazing this scrub is, it got rid of my strawberry skin in just one scrub,” one reviewer exclaimed. “It leaves such an amazing scent and it leaves my skin feeling silky smooth every time. I usually only scrub once or twice a week and I rarely ever have dry skin.”

It’s the exact response Ms Hatzis and her team wanted from creating high-performance skin and body care.

It’s the brand’s dedication and consistency to creating and marketing affordable, cruelty-free and ‘life-changing products’ that has customers around the globe hooked.

BEST-SELLING FRANK BODY PRODUCTS

Frank Body began adding to their collection as the Original Body Scrub took off and now, the natural coffee-based skincare range has grown to 40 products — and counting.

After the Glycolic Acid Scrub, their second bestseller is an unassuming product that has been earning rave reviews all over social media – Frank Body’s Clearing Body Wash, with 111,038 units being sold.

Retailing at an insanely low $14, the “game-changing” body wash has been praised for banishing body acne and clearing pimples, leaving skin clear and smooth.

“We struggle to keep it in stock because it’s so popular,” co-founder Jess Hatzis told news.com.au checkout.

Made with salicylic acid, Kakadu plum and vitamin B, which form a powerful acne-fighting concoction, it’s no wonder the Clearing Body Wash has sold out multiple times.

TikToker Cinda McGarrity last year recommended the Clearing Body Wash, saying, “I have never felt more clean in my whole life … The whole day I was like I just feel so clean. I just felt amazing all day.”

Hailing it as a “godsend” for body breakouts, the Clearing Body Wash sold out in stores after McGarrity’s TikTok.

Shoppers are obsessed with the results with over 800 reviews on the Frank Body site, calling it a “miracle worker” for the “instant results” in getting rid of bacne and body pimples and bumps.

This body wash is a lifesaver,” one happy customer detailed. “Doesn’t dry my skin out like most body washes and calms my back breakouts and helps with texture. The consistency is so nice and lathers really well.”

Another raved: “This body wash starts working instantly! I have always had really bad acne over my body and it really just brings everything to the surface and gets rid of it! My skin looks so clear and feels amazing. A little goes a long way. And it also smells lovely.”

Frank Body also stocks all your SPF needs with the SPF30 The Better Oil ($25) and SPF50+ Hydrating Body Sunscreen ($30).

The functionality goes beyond providing UVA and UVB protection, too — these coconut-scented products contain nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and jojoba oil, to keep your skin ultra-moisturised at all times.

Always read the label and follow directions for use. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Frequent reapplication or use in accordance with directions is required for effective sun protection.

While customers won’t find a single product over $50 – a winning selling point for the brand – they can save even more money by shopping the Frank Body kits, which make for perfect gifting options, too.

For example, investing in the Best Face Forward Kit ($115) saves you 20 per cent and includes six of the best-selling face products plus a bonus travel pouch.

The Pore-ifics Kit ($60) boasts over 2,044 five-star reviews and includes the only three products needed to banish facial breakouts. And the Scrub Stars Kit ($45) is the perfect fit for the newcomer wanting to try a selection of the best Frank Body scrubs.

THE FUTURE OF FRANK BODY

There’s no doubt Frank Body has been a financial success but for Ms Hatzis and her team, success to them is more than just figures.

“The most successful moments for us are when we get photos and reviews from our customers telling us how the product helped them,” she said.

With even more exciting new product launches on the horizon, Ms Hatzis is excited to continue transforming people’s skin and improving their self-confidence with five-star, cruelty-free formulas.

“With all of us being more mindful about how we’re spending our money, customers deserve products that give them results and bang for their buck. I think that’s what all skincare should be delivering like we do.”
