When our favourite athletes achieve incredible feats on the world stage, they often make it all look so effortless.

Take Dylan Alcott AO for example. The former Aussie tennis champ is a four-time dual-sport Paralympic gold medallist, and one of just three people to hold a Golden Slam, with wins at the Australian Open, French Open, US Open and Wimbledon.

Sporting success on this scale is so inspiring to see, but in Dylan’s eyes, it’s no fluke. Instead, he believes performing at your best starts with sticking to a strong and effective routine, both on and off the court.

“Routines are everything, and not just regarding your physical performance on the court,” he told news.com.au checkout.

“What we try to do as athletes is stimulate just a normal day, whether you’re on centre court at Wimbledon or Rod Laver Arena, because you don’t want the moment to get too much when you’re out there.

“Whether it’s the same routine every single time that I serve a ball, I do that in practice and I do that in matches, and I’d try to eat the same things. I think that’s also really important to make sure that you look after yourself to be able to perform at your best.”

After retiring from tennis in 2022, Dylan realised that he lost some of the advantages that came with a strong training routine, and decided to take matters into his own hands.

“It was a good lesson to learn pretty quickly, because even though I’ve retired, I make sure that I really look after myself because you don’t just get the physical benefits of it, you get those mental benefits as well,” he said.

“I’m actually in a really good space right now where I’ve got a lot of my routine back, I’m looking after myself physically, mentally, looking after, and how I look as well.”

Dylan is certainly a busy man. His current schedule includes media interviews, speaking appearances, alongside his charity the Dylan Alcott Foundation.

And it’s his recent appointment as an Australian ambassador for skincare brand CeraVe, which keeps him looking at his best.

“I’ve actually loved being part of the CeraVe family, not just because their products are awesome, but I was using them, you know, well before I actually became involved in an official capacity,” Dylan said.

CeraVe is the real MVP of skincare – simple, effective, affordable and accessible skincare for all, that is developed with dermatologists for all skin types.

“The products do what they say they will do and my skin thanks me for it.”

An integrated approach to skincare

Whether he’s on the tennis court or in the commentary booth, Dylan says that he’s “100 per cent” supports an integrated approach to health and wellbeing, where he doesn’t have to think too much about eating well or training hard, simply because it’s already built into his day.

And that also includes making CeraVe skincare part of his every day routine.

“You’d be surprised how much your physical health and looking after your body, your skin, really affects your mental health as well,” he said.

“And that was something that I used to get from being an athlete because I was so active.

“When I stopped being active for my job, I found that it really affected my mental health more so than my physical health.”

CeraVe’s latest “MVP” range includes a number of products including the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, the CeraVe Moisturising Cream and the CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm, with Dylan saying his favourite is the CeraVe Moisturising Lotion.

“I always use the CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm and the CeraVe Moisturising Lotion to make sure that I’m looking the part and looking after my skin,” he said.

“My routine with CeraVe keeps me in good nick and makes me want to perform at my best.”

Going the distance in Paris

Recently returned from the 2024 Paris Olympics, Dylan added that the products in the CeraVe ‘MVP’ range also perform highly while travelling.

“I was there for eight, nine weeks, so one of the cool parts about it is I actually ran out, but because they’re a global product, I was able to get some more when I was in Paris,” he added.

“And the only thing I had to do was translate the French into English to know what I actually wanted to use.

“They travelled incredibly well, and I don’t really go anywhere without them.”

Breaking down men’s skincare ‘stigma’

Through his ambassador role for CeraVe, Dylan says he’s definitely noticed some cultural shifts around how men approach skincare and grooming in general.

“There’s no reason why I can’t use a cleanser or a moisturiser. I’ve never been too embarrassed to do it, which has been a good thing,” Dylan said.

“I don’t really care too much what people think, but I love the fact that more blokes, I think that stigma is evaporating, and blokes can kind of do whatever they want to do.”

“The best thing about the CeraVe products is they are unisex and absolutely anybody can use them.”
