“Men” and “cosmetics” are two words you wouldn’t normally expect to see in the same sentence, but one trailblazing skincare company is hoping to change all that.
Shakeup Cosmetics has quickly become one of the world’s fastest growing men’s beauty brands, and after its UK launch in 2019, the products are now being stocked in Australia.
Co-founder Jake Xu told news.com.au checkout that he’s seen a big shift in how men approach self care in general, with a massive emphasis on a healthy lifestyle – and that starts with skincare and grooming.
“More and more men are taking better care of themselves, this includes a better and healthier diet, cutting back or quitting drinking or smoking, exercising more and having a better structured skincare routine is definitely a big part of that trend and mindset,” he said.
“We have a tight and precise collection of products, but covering a wide spectrum of skin needs. From a daily face wash to an anti-ageing serum, to a tinted moisturiser, there is something for every man no matter where they are in their skincare journey.”
Promoted as “hybrid products”, the Shakeup range combines the best aspects of skincare with the benefits of cosmetics, to help with things like an even skin tone and complexion.
Subtlety is also king here too, with the brand taking a “skincare first” mindset, meaning all Shakeup products are designed to look as fresh and natural as possible.
Essentially, these products are designed to leave people none the wiser you’re wearing them, and as an added bonus, all products are vegan formulated and cruelty free.
I decided to try out one of its best-selling items from the range, which is Shakeup’s Let’s Face It BB Tinted Moisturiser.
This performs like a regular moisturiser but includes a subtle tint to help cover up things like redness, post-acne scars and other skin imperfections.
And as an added bonus, it’s currently half price at Priceline for $29.99 (down from $59.99), and I was honestly really impressed with the results.
HONEST REVIEW OF ‘LET’S FACE IT’ TINTED MOISTURISER
Let’s Face It BB Tinted Moisturiser Light, $29.99 (down from $59.99) at Priceline
Tried and Tested by Troy Nankervis, news.com.au Shopping Writer
I’ve been wearing a daily moisturiser for some years now, and I’ve always liked products that are quick to apply so I can jet out the door, and that will also go the distance across the day.
So to be honest, I was a little hesitant to try Shakeup’s Let’s Face It BB Tinted Moisturiser, only because I’ve never really been interested in tinted products and have been pretty happy with my existing routine.
But, equally, I was also sold on some of the product features, which includes the promise of a cooling sensation and day-long freshness. The formula is also said to even out the skin, covering up redness and blemishes.
With Shakeup’s Let’s Face It BB Tinted Moisturiser, there’s five different shades to choose from (Extra Light, Light, Medium, Bronze, Dark), and I went for the Light tone given I have a reasonably fair complexion.
The packaging is really nice and understated and I also liked the 50ml sizing of the tube, which is not too big.
This would actually be great for your carry-on liquids while travelling and for everyday use, this is something that you could easily throw into your bag if you’re heading to the gym before work.
At the moment I have some stubble, so when using Shakeup’s Let’s Face It Moisturiser I applied the product mainly around my cheeks, nose and forehead.
This is because I found while trying to apply it to my jawline and chin, the product wasn’t absorbing properly into my skin due to my facial hair, and flaking a little bit.
If I was clean shaven, I would have applied the product to these areas too.
The consistency of the Let’s Face It Moisturiser is great, and you don’t actually need to use a lot for good coverage, and it also absorbs well into my skin.
I’d be confident to say a 50ml tube would last at least a month or two if you’re applying this regularly, so at $29.99 at Priceline, this is also really great value for money.
One thing to note is to be mindful of how much you’re applying, the first few days I was possibly using a little too much on my skin, which was breaking out.
I was really happy with how the Shakeup Let’s Face It BB Tinted Moisturiser evened out my skin tone in a really nice way, and covered up a little bit of redness around my cheeks, which I’d put down to the winter weather.
Across my week, I checked with a few different people, including colleagues, friends and my roommate, and they were all surprised when I told them I was wearing a tinted moisturiser – the consistent feedback I received was they literally could not tell.
Overall, I’m pretty impressed with the quality and feel of Shakeup’s Let’s Face It Moisturiser and would recommend it to other men considering a pivot into tinted products.

HOW MEN’S SKINCARE IS CHANGING
Shakeup is championing an emerging range of hybrid beauty and grooming products developed especially for men, pairing the best in skincare with the features and benefits of high quality cosmetics.
Wanting to “shake up” the industry (pardon the pun), Shakeup Cosmetics co-founder Jake Xu added that it’s encouraging to see more Australian men “taking their skincare more seriously”.
“Compared to female consumers, we do believe that Aussie men are more brand loyal when they have found a product they like,” he told news.com.au checkout.
“But they, very much like all consumer groups, are looking for quality products, safe products, that are efficacious, and do what it says on the tin.
“Lately, given the economic climate, value for money is also high on the priority list when it comes to purchase decisions.”
THE BACKSTORY OF SHAKEUP COSMETICS
Shakeup was created by twin brothers Shane and Jake, who after managing their own skin conditions like rosacea and acne, realised there was a really big gap for cosmetics tailored especially for men.
First launching the brand in the UK back in 2019, they’ve collected multiple awards for their products along the way.
Fast forward to 2024 and Shakeup is now available right around the world, with one product selling every two minutes.
“We want Shakeup to become the go-to brand for men’s skincare, globally,” Xu added.
“The rise of men’s beauty and self-care is a global movement and we are seeing interests from retailers and distributors all over the world as they start to take notice of this growing consumer demand and the potential incremental commercial return this category can bring.”
As a skincare brand, Shakeup’s mission is less about looking your best, instead leaving men feeling more confident. It’s a reputation that Jake takes great pride in.
“We are most proud when we receive feedback from customers telling us how our products have helped them improve their skin, solved their skin issues that they had suffered for a long time and most importantly how they helped restore their confidence and how they feel about themselves in their own skin,” he told news.com.au.
