If you find shaving your facial hair to be an arduous task, it’s time to think about investing in an electric shaver. Not only do they deliver a close and smooth shave, unlike a traditional manual razor, they’re far less irritating for your skin.
“An electric shaver doesn’t have blades as such, but multiple cutting points which capture more hairs in one sweep,” men’s grooming expert Michael Brown tells news.com.au.
“Generally it’s an easier, mess free, less irritating way to shave and I have never looked back after using an electric shaver, my skin thanks me for it.”
Ready to make the switch but don’t know where to start? From premium razor models to something more budget-friendly, our team has rounded up the very products out there at the moment, including the Remington R4 Rotary Shaver, and the Philips Shaver Series 5000, which is a great all rounder.
We’ve also road tested the Braun Series 6-61 R1000s Men's Shaver and because it’s 100 per cent waterproof, it’s also a great option for using in the shower if you’re running out of time in the morning. Plus right now it's been slashed by 51 per cent, bringing the price down to $148.

“Having used Braun razors for over 20 years, I find this model to be the best yet, combining quietness in operation with a very smooth shave,:” one review reads.
"It is well balanced to use, and I find that a single pass is enough to produce an excellent result, without needing to use the locking head.”

BEST ELECTRIC RAZOR
Braun Series 6-61 R1000s Men's Shaver, $148 (down from $299) at Amazon Australia
What You Need To Know
If you’re looking for a great portable electric shaver, some of the things you’d be looking out for are products which are cordless, waterproof and rechargeable.
And in good news, the Braun Series 6 has this trifecta - it’s basically everything you could need in an electric men’s shaver.
Once charged this up fully, it can last up to three weeks (that’s around 50 minutes running time all up), and it’s been designed to be great on sensitive skin too.
This is due to its SensoFlex swivel head and blades which both work with the shape of your skin to reduce pressure on your skin.
Customers are really happy with this one too, saying it’s a great choice for everyday use.
“One of the best if not the best shaver I have ever purchased with a price tag to match. Shaves really close and a dream to clean or at least that is what my hubby says. Loads of accessories are available as well. Oh yes, almost forgot, service and delivery spot on. Thoroughly recommend,” one buyer said.
Another added: “Hard to fault for the price with a nice close smooth shave.”

With shavers, once I find something I’m a fan of, I will generally stick with it. And safe to say, the Braun Series 6-61 R1000s Men's Shaver could be the next permanent addition to my bathroom cabinet.
It’s very easy to set up and use, literally after opening the box, I charged this up in the power pocket and within a few hours it was ready to go.
The shaver itself is really lightweight to hold and feels ergonomic in my hand, and during use, it’s soft grip is comfortable to manoeuvre to the shape of my chin and cheekbones.
The blades are really high quality and not harsh on my skin, and actually do a really close shave which I’m happy with. I also really like that you can use this both as a wet and dry shaver - it’s one less thing to think about in the morning as I’m getting ready for my day.
The black case is also great, and I’ve been able to take this away with me if I’m travelling interstate or going away for the weekend, plus the battery life is long lasting, and rechargeable. So if for example I am away, I don’t need to worry about taking the power cord with me (if it’s charged up).
It’s also a really fair price for $129, and within the price range of what I’d be prepared to spend for a gift for something like Father’s Day or Christmas.
Overall, a great product that won’t disappoint, the Braun Series 6-61 R1000s Men's Shaver has earned its place on this list of Best Men’s Electric Shavers.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING AN ELECTRIC SHAVER
When choosing electric shavers to include in our list, we evaluated several factors:
Corded vs cordless: While a cordless razor sounds great because you can use it anywhere, keep in mind that there are some benefits to a corded razor. In the long run, they can save on batteries and last longer in general, but of course corded razors limit the availability of where you can use them.
Price: When you compare electric razors, the prices can really vary - the more you pay, the more cool features it will come with. But don't feel like you have to spend big bucks to get a highly-rated electric shaver. You should be able to find a great one around the $100-$200 mark.
Run time: An electric razor requires a longer run time - it's always going to be more handy for the future you, so try and look for something around the 60 minute mark.
Charge time: When it comes to cordless razors, you don't want to waste time with an electric shaver that takes forever to charge. Around an hour should be suffice, and what you should expect to find on the market.
Quick charge: Realised you forgot to charge your electric shaver? Don't fret. Premium razor models offer a quick charge feature, usually ranging anywhere from three to five minutes. It obviously doesn't give you a full run time, but just enough for a quick, last-minute shave.
Waterproof: It's always an added bonus when your electric shaver is waterproof - it means you can take it with you in the shower, perfect for when you're in a rush in the morning.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ARE ELECTRIC SHAVERS WORTH IT?
Not only are electric shavers far easier to use than regular razors, they’re less likely to irritate your skin, as Michael explained, and good ones come with several handy features that make them well worth the investment.
“A good electric shaver can be used wet or dry – thick coarse hair often shaves better in a warm shower as hair softens – plus most have a flexible head, meaning it floats and moves to the contours of your face, where a razor is fixed and more likely to create little nicks and cuts,” he says.
“A good shaver has skin guards and foils to protect your skin from irritation, cuts and little nicks, as well as multiple trimmers to cut hair that is flat, lifted and growing in different patterns, so you get a closer shave in less strokes over the same area of skin, so therefore less irritation.”
WHICH IS BETTER: FOIL OR ROTARY SHAVER?
There are pros and cons to both types of electric shaver. A foil shaver is one with a straight head that contains oscillating blades (or “cutters”) underneath a thin sheet of metal with tiny holes to capture the hair. The rotary style of shaver has round shaving foils and blades that move in a circular motion. Here are the main differences that will help you choose which style is better for you:
Best use: Foils are best for precision shaving and styling on areas where a clean line is necessary, due to their straight edge. Rotaries are ideal for shaving larger areas where you want to cover a greater surface area more quickly.
Design: The straight edges of a foil shaver can make them slightly more difficult for manoeuvring around your nose, while rotary shavers often have flexible heads that can move with the contours of your face.
Hair thickness: Foils are best for those with finer facial hair, while rotaries are generally better for those with thicker, coarse hair.
Shaving frequency: Those who don’t like to shave every day will find rotaries ideal for getting a close shave after a few days’ growth. Foils are best for those who shave daily.
Preferred length: Due to their design, foil shavers can often provide a slightly cleaner shave than rotaries.
IS IT BETTER TO SHAVE WET OR DRY WITH AN ELECTRIC SHAVER?
Firstly, make sure that your electric shaver is safe for wet use before you try to suds it up. Wet shaving, by the way, is when you use shaving cream and water alongside your shaver to create a lather that lifts hair away from the skin.
The benefit of wet shaving is that it can provide a closer shave, however it does also risk greater irritation as the hair regrows from the underside of the skin. Dry shaving may not provide as smooth a shave, although it makes it less likely for you to nick or cut your skin.
HOW TO REDUCE RAZOR BUMPS?
Razor bumps and ingrown hairs are enough for someone to forget shaving all together. But if you work in professional environment and need to keep the beard hair at bay, here's a few steps you can take to reduce razor bumps and say hello to smooth skin.
Prep your skin before shaving with a cleanser and make sure you use a moisturising shaving cream - this will also ensure you don't end up with any electric razor cuts.
Shave in the direction the hair grows and apply a soothing aftershave balm afterwards to treat and calm the skin.
