BEST IPL
Philips Lumea Prestige IPL Hair Removal Device, $719, Harvey Norman
What You Need To Know
The Philips Lumea Prestige is the IPL device you should reach for, not least because of its ray gun-shaped body (we see you striking that Han Solo pose, no judgment).
But in all seriousness, this cordless wonder can read your skin type and adjust the light needed accordingly. Patience is also a virtue, following the suggested usage Philips says can lead to approximately six months of hair-free happiness. (Just note that IPL doesn’t work on all skin or hair types, so check before investing.)
BEST WAX FOR MANSCAPING
Wax Necessities Barbero Depilatory Hard Wax for Men 410ml, $38.47, at Amazon
What You Need To Know
It’s Italian made, and designed for blokes – it’s formulated to remove the toughest, hardiest hairs, but leave your skin feeling top of the world.
And the dark metallic colour of the wax just emphasises that this is serious hair-controlling business going on.
Plus, it comes in a very macho-looking tin as well. We’re sold.
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO SHAVE OR TRIM MY HAIR?
There’s a reason that so many of the appliances here are shower- or waterproof. Trimming in the shower keeps the area you’re treating clean and washes away hairs. However, for some guys it’s harder to focus on specific areas when water is pummeling you, so try a warm shower beforehand to help soften hairs. And then rinse them away after.
For longer hairs, it’s a good idea to trim manually first before using a shaver or trimmer, to avoid clogging up the blades.
Another good tip: Go slow! And heed the rule of thumb this writer was taught in high-school woodworking class – you can always take off more, but you can’t put it back!
If you’re using a new appliance, and especially if you’re trimming your pubic region, take your time and be gentle.
CAN I USE A BEARD TRIMMER FOR BODY HAIR?
More Coverage
This is not advisable as the two processes require different kinds of blades, and body trimmers are designed to tackle tougher hairs. These worlds are best kept separate.
However, as we’ve seen above, many appliances come with different attachments and combs for different body areas. They do this for a reason – so stick with the right ones for what you’re dealing with.
