There was once a time when mascara had one purpose – to enhance the appearance of lashes.

Nowadays, it’s morphed into an umbrella term for a range of products aimed at delivering on a whole bunch of lash desires.

One of the most common and coveted varieties? Volumising mascara.

Volumising mascara works by thickening lashes and – you guessed it – adding intense volume and thickness to lashes that are lacking. According to grooming expert and celebrity makeup artist Michael Brown, the mascara wand is just as crucial as the thickening formula in picking a volume mascara.

“They feature a fatter brush with more bristles that transports product easier to lashes to gain density,” he tells news.com.au.

The affect is thick, full and fluttery lashes and the great news is, they don’t cost the world.

How does volumising mascara work?

“Volumising mascara features a thicker, fuller application brush and the same goes for the formula,” Michael says. “A good volume mascara won’t leave excessive amounts of product on the mascara brush, otherwise too much product could clump lashes. The in-built wiper in the neck of the product should remove excess product as the brush is removed from the tube.”

How do I apply volumising mascara?

“This really depends on the length and size of your lashes,” explains Michael. “If they are short, you can start by moving the wand side to side and then comb through from root to tip.

If you have longer lashes, moving side to side is a no-no, as the longer lashes could sway left to right and clamp to other lashes, creating a clumpy effect. I like to really comb through lashes with the mascara brush from base of lashes to tip, and with a twist of your wrist while doing this, lashes are combed through perfectly.”

How do I remove volumising mascara?

“If the mascara is not waterproof, most are removed easily with general cleansing or micellar waters. For sensitive eyes, a product like Face Halo Micro Fibre cleansing pad is a great alternative. If it is waterproof, you will need to use an oil-based cleanser to dissolve the product off first.”
