Year 12 graduates react to ATAR scores

One of Victoria’s top-performing students, Anastasia Zaytseva from Brighton Secondary College, was in disbelief on Thursday after receiving three perfect study scores of 50 and an ATAR of 99.8.

She joins 41 other students who achieved at least two perfect study scores, while 41 year 12 students also got the perfect rank of 99.95.

Out of the students who gave permission for their results to be published, about 549 received perfect scores of 50 in one subject, 334 received at least one 49 and 475 received at least one 48.

Anastasia set her alarm for 6.55am so she would be awake in time to open up her results.

“At first I was a bit confused and was like ‘how could this happen’,” she said.

“I know I put a lot of work in over the year and I was going well … but I never really knew I would get a 50.”

It’s not the first time Anastasia has achieved the perfect study score, with the graduate receiving a 50 in general maths in year 11.

Other subjects where she got a perfect score were biology, health and human development and psychology, and she also achieved study scores of 42 in chemistry.

Anastasia hopes to study medicine at Monash next year.

Meanwhile, for twins Alexander and Isabella Grech, any signs of sibling rivalry were replaced with love and support as they received their ATARs bright and early on Thursday.

The Kolbe Catholic College graduates opened their results together with their parents at the dining table.

Alexander, who studied English language, maths methods and chemistry this year, achieved an ATAR of 96.75, with his highest study score being a 45 in general maths.

“I got the ATAR I expected but I actually got better than expected study scores,” he said.

As for his sister Isabella – who described herself as the “more creative one” and studied English, legal studies, food tech, art and media – she obtained a rank of 76.70.

“I was happy to see I that I got a higher ATAR than expected,” she said.

“I’m proud of all my study scores especially food tech despite being one off from 40.”

He also got a 43 in biology which he completed in year 11 and a 39 in maths methods, bringing his ATAR to 98.75.

“I ran into the kitchen with my parents before viewing the ATAR and it was just a rush of relief once I saw everything,” he said.

“My parents were very thrilled and I’m glad my effort paid off.”

The subjects with the most scores over 40 were English with 3051, followed by general maths with 2205 and psychology 1210.

Hardworking students shared their stories about opening marks on Thursday, with two girls from the Strathcona Girls’ Grammar class of 2024 reflecting on the result from all their hard work.

Sophie said she was “really happy”.

“I went straight downstairs to celebrate with my parents before heading off to work for the morning. After work, I spent the rest of the day celebrating with friends who also got their results,” she told the Herald Sun.

“Next year, my goal is to continue playing elite sport – competing in the VFLW – while also attending university. At the moment, my top preference for university is a double degree in pharmaceutical science and chemical engineering, and it won’t be long before I find out if I’ll begin training with a VFLW team.”

Her classmate Tahlia said she was also “really pleased” with her scores.

“My dad and step mum told me to cover my eyes as they pulled up my results, and when I opened them, I was really pleased with the outcome.

“I then woke my sister up and we headed to Chadstone for a celebratory lunch, and to buy some new clothes now that I’ve finished high school. I’m hoping to study at the Australian Defence Force Academy before entering the Australian Defence Force,” she said.

VCE results glitch

Frustrated year 12 students were affected by a “technical glitch” that stopped them from accessing the website of the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre for hours.

Nearly 50,000 students received their results on Thursday, with many rushing online to change preferences and get advice. The website showed an error message telling them “ something’s gone wrong”.

The website has since been fixed and is working as normal.
