After a long year, Victoria's VCE students get ready to receive their results

Montmorency Secondary College

Year 12 student Jacob Lawrence opened his results by accident this morning before getting the best shock of his life.

“I logged into the website about two minutes before 7am and the study scores just popped right up,” he said.

“I ran into the kitchen with my parents before viewing the ATAR and it was just a rush of relief once I saw it.”

The Montmorency Secondary College student achieved an ATAR of 98.75, with all his study scores in the 40s.

“Everyone has their expectations but at the end of the day I was never really sure until I saw the number so it was all still a bit of a surprise,” he said.

Principal Frances Ibbott was delighted with the excellent overall results for the VCE cohort which included more than half of students receiving an ATAR over 70, with 31 per cent over 80 and 15 per cent over 90.

The school also got a median study score of about 31, significantly higher than last year.

“The higher median score is a testament to the hard work of the whole VCE cohort, and to the teachers and support staff,” Ms Ibbott said.

A total of 46 students achieved a study score over 40 and one student got a perfect result in English.

Belmont High School

There’s been some terrific results at Belmont High School this year according to principal Joshua Baker.

More students achieved study scores higher than 40, than ever before.

“Nine students got ATARs in the 90s so that was really pleasing,” he said.

“The kids really worked hard, and the teachers gave up a lot of their time and effort.”

Melbourne Grammar School

Three hardworking Melbourne Grammar School students Albert Chen, Alex Kartel and Sanjeet Sampath achieved the perfect ATAR of 99.95.

The school was also home to another 19 students who achieved a rank of 99 or higher, placing them in the top 1 per cent of the state.

A total of 16 students achieved perfect scores of 50 in one or more subjects, with their achievements spanning a wide range of disciplines, including Biology, Chemistry, Classical Studies, English, Japanese as a Second Language, Legal Studies, Mathematical Methods and Physical Education.

Headmaster Philip Grutzner expressed his deepest gratitude to the exceptional teachers who supported and guided the students.

“While these VCE results are significant, it is important to remember that an ATAR is only one measure of success,” he said.

“The qualities that will define the Class of 2024 in the years to come — their values, work ethic, and relationships — will shape their futures far more profoundly than any number.”

McClelland College

McClelland College in Frankston is starting to see the fruits of an “explicit approach” to teaching through a general upward trend in results, according to principal Laura Spence.

“We pride ourselves on our explicit teaching and learning, and education by design model, which has provided students the best opportunity for outstanding VCE results over many years,” she said.

Mazenod College

This year, 54 Mazenod College students achieved an ATAR of 90 plus.

The cohort achieved a median study score of 33, the first time this has been reached since 2013, while 13.5 per cent of scores over 40 — the best result since 2012.

“At Mazenod, education is more than academic achievement — it is about forming well-rounded individuals who are ready to contribute meaningfully to society,” the school’s principal Dr Paul Shannon said.

Brunswick Secondary College

Brunswick Secondary College has reported impressive results, with a median study score of 30 and nine students with an ATAR above 95.

Principal Karen Harris said she was “really pleased” with the results, particularly as most students had made the cut for their preferred course.

School captain Harry Lalor is an example of this.

Inspired by his grandparents, Harry’s passion is cooking – he has done work experience in top-end Melbourne restaurants including Vue de Monde, and been on a cultural exchange to France.

He had intended to be a chef but has had a rethink, bolstered by his ATAR of 89.

“I’m having a slight career change and I’m actually going to study law,” he said.

St Kevin’s College

The Toorak Catholic boys’ school is celebrating its excellent results, posting a median study score of 35 and a median ATAR of 85.43, placing 50 per cent of students in the top 15 per cent of the state.

In other results, 39.18 per cent (105 students) received an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10 per cent of the state and 24 per cent of students received study scores of 40 and above.

Director of Teaching and Learning, Hannah Kollmorgen, and Principal Deborah Barker said: “Congratulations to the Class of 2024! Our strong academic tradition of personal excellence at St Kevin’s College continues with our students producing exceptional VCE results.

Once again, our year 12 cohort came together, working with our expert year 12 teachers in and out of the classroom. In addition, the support from families, wellbeing programs and out of hours study opportunities, including the Winter Revision Holiday Program, the September Holiday Revision Program and Café Academus, kept the boys on task, happy and engaged.”

Tarneit Senior College

While VCE students were up early opening their ATAR scores, year 12 student Sajad Ramezani was already at work on a local building site — so busy he didn’t even have a chance to check his results.

“I’m doing carpentry full-time now,” he said. “I want to finish fourth year and then do my certificate and hopefully open my own business in the future.”

Sajad is one of many Victorian students undertaking a School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship, after successfully completing his VCE Vocational Major study requirements.

Meanwhile, four of his fellow VCE pupils received ATARs above 90, and 23 received ATARs above 8, in what has been described as a tremendous achievement given many students are new arrivals to Australia. “These results are some of the best we’ve had in the school’s history,” principal Shane Cole-Hayhow said.

Why ATARs aren’t everything

Wheelers Hill Secondary College

Wheelers Hill Secondary College’s results were the best in years, according to Principal Fern Brisbane, with several students achieving results in the 90s including international student captain Xinle Huang.

“We’ve had some focused, hardworking students this year, who were well-supported by our school and did everything to the best of their ability,” Ms Brisbane said.

“Our kids have shined and, as a principal, I can’t ask for anything more.”

Brighton Secondary College

Brighton Secondary College student Anastasia Zaytseva set an alarm for 6.55am so she would be ready to open up her results at 7am.

The year 12 student, who achieved a 50 study score in general maths in year 11, earned three more perfect scores of 50 to add to her collection this year, bringing her ATAR to 99.8.

“At first I was a bit confused and was like ‘how could this happen’?” she said.

“I know I put a lot of work in over the year and I was doing well … but I never really knew I would get a 50.”

Anastasia’s goal is to study medicine at Monash next year.

Sebastian, who completed year 12 after writing a book about his cancer journey — The Worst Best Year — achieved an ATAR of 99.7, with all his study scores above 40.

The year 12 student was in disbelief after he opened his results with his family and friends, including his younger brother who played the drums in celebration.

“We all did quite well, even better than we expected … today is about the number but it’s a bit more than that, it’s great to be able to celebrate 18 years of learning and our journey as lifelong learners,” Sebastian said.

The King David School

The King David School’s students celebrated their great results on Wednesday. The school reported that “7 per cent of our students achieved 98 or above, 33 per cent of our students achieved 90 or above and 69 per cent of our students achieved 80 or above”.

“We are pleased with the cohort’s strong VCE results. The students’ dedication and commitment, supported and guided by the expertise of their teachers has enabled them to achieve results that will open doors to the tertiary courses they seek,” Mr Light said.

They will instead share stories that reveal what they stand for as a group: kindness, courage, and a deep sense of connection to each other. Nevertheless, as a cohort, they have produced results to be proud of.”

Education Minister congratulates students

On Thursday morning, Education Minister Ben Carroll congratulated the 61,998 students who will graduate this year with their VCE, including 8,250 VCE Vocational Major graduates who gained practical experience in one or more industries through VET studies.

More than 22,700 VCE graduates have received study scores of 40 or higher, more than 688 have received the maximum study score of 50, and 3160 students have been awarded the VCE Baccalaureate.

VCE results and Australian Tertiary Admission Rankings (ATARs) are available from 7am today for students who registered to access their results online at resultsandatar.vic.edu.au/results/applicants.

Students with questions about their results can call the Post Results and ATAR Service on 9637 3877 or 1800 653 080.

Mr Carroll said: “Congratulations to every student – you should be proud of everything you’ve already achieved as you move to the next exciting step, whether it be further study, training, the workforce or a gap year”.

La Trobe University Education Professor Therese Keane said there were many pathways for students to achieve their goals if they didn’t get their dream ATAR.

“Falling short of desired results is simply a detour, not the final destination,” she said.

Among the students who will receive their results on Thursday is Emmaus College school captain Miranda Liu, who was voted by her class as the most likely student to become the prime minister.

The 18-year-old, who is passionate about humanities and was awarded second place for the Parliamentary Prize last year, undertook legal studies, English and history this year after studying two year 12 subjects last year.

“My first university preference is to study law and politics at Monash University,” she said.
