Schoolgirls from Balwyn High School and Carey Grammar fight at Doncaster Westfield food court

Teenagers from two of Melbourne’s most prestigious schools have traded blows in a savage fight involving kicking and hair-pulling.

A violent fight between year ten schoolgirls from two of the state’s most prestigious schools has been described as “very confronting”.

Footage circulating on social media shows two girls from Balwyn High School and Carey Grammar fighting at the Doncaster Westfield food court last Friday afternoon in front of shocked shoppers.

Carey Grammar is now investigating the incident, which involved the Balwyn High student attacking the other student, punching her, pushing her over, kicking her in the head and grabbing her hair.

Onlookers filmed the assault, which continued until nearby adults separated the pair.

It’s understood the two exchanged vitriolic snapchat messages afterwards and the fallout is continuing.

A worker from a Westfield Doncaster fast food outlet told the Herald Sun the fight was “very confronting”.

“The fight was very violent, it’s not the first time this has happened in the food court between school kids,” she said.

“There were also a lot of families around at the time, they were scared and stood back.

“There is no place for this sort of violence in our community, it needs to stop.”

Jonathan Walter, Carey Grammar principal, said the school “is aware of an incident that took place outside of school, involving an altercation between two teenagers, one of whom is a new student at Carey.

“The school is currently conducting an investigation of the incident and is extending appropriate support, counselling and care to the student and her family.

“Carey takes all allegations of inappropriate student behaviour very seriously and we are in discussions with the student, parents, police and counsellors to fully understand the situation before taking any further action. At Carey, we work hard to promote a culture which reflects our values of care and respect for others, and we encourage all students to uphold these expectations,” he said.

The student came from another leading eastern suburbs’ private school to the Kew co-ed school this year.

A Department of Education spokesperson said: “Victorian government schools have zero tolerance for any violence, and incidents of physical altercations in schools are extremely rare”.

“If any student is alleged to be involved in any illegal activity outside the school environment, the school will always work proactively and closely with Victoria Police, who are responsible for investigating criminal conduct.”

The Herald Sun has in recent months reported on several incidents involving groups of young female students taking part in vicious fights.

Months of unrest between students in years seven, eight and nine at Forest Hill College last year led to police being called and students sent home amid a campus-wide lockdown.

The incident at Westfield Doncaster came just days after a female student brutally attacked another pupil inside a toilet block at Lara Secondary College.

Video footage taken by a group of bystanders captured a girl charging at another student who was inside a cubicle, before a brawl erupted between the pair.

Meanwhile in November, a student from exclusive private college Fintona Girls’ school was left with extensive scratches on her face and neck after a feud between two year nine girls broke out.

More than 100 fight club videos involving students celebrating violent brawls and other sickening acts had also been posted on Instagram in the past six months.

Schools across Melbourne were embroiled in an escalating fight club craze with disturbing footage showing students being thrown to the ground, kicked and stomped on.
